  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Recently directed this. Shot on EPIC. Superspeed glass. $5k budget and could only afford a 4k and two 1200's (blowing out window). We got really unlucky and it was super dark and rainy the day of the shoot. Consequently, I wasn't able to blow the windows out as much as I wanted. My original vision was a complete silhouette of the talent during the wide shot with more of a defined shaft of sunlight behind her. Constructive criticism appreciated!

Wonderful - very very filmic ! Not sure about the text as well but all in all the mood was fantastic. !
Simply loved it !
 
I have the same feeling as everyone else. Change the text. Maybe have her blow the dust out of her hands, then fade to black and have the text fade in or dissolve in. Use a matted dust element for the transition between the real dust and the black fade in.

Thanks guys! I felt the same way. Here's the deal with the text. My VFX guy was super busy and helping on the project for free. He wanted to do a full resolution render of smoke being blown out of her hands and an outline of "Illusion" forming. Unfortunately, a full fluid motion render would have taken 5 days. I had to settle for quarter rez as it was the best he could do. There were jagged edges on the comp due to the low resolution so I just threw it into AE and roto'd the outline and filled with text. Wish I would have had more time to work on that.

Regardless, thanks for the positive feedback!! Client loved it btw.

Thanks for the kind words! I love the superspeeds as well, the way they flare, their microcontrast. A great look when coupled with the high resolution of the Epic! I've shot a lot of music videos with them.

Yeah I personally am quite fond of Contax Zeiss lenses as you could argue that they are a very "poor man's" Superspeeds. They are Zeiss's still lenses made from the same era (70s, 80s), and they are supposed to have a very similar T* coating (as do Hasselblads). I love them for the same reasons - great flare, great micro-contrast.

We shot a spot on Super Speeds a couple of weeks ago and it was like using my Contax's on Steroids - the 1.2 aperture is MIND BOGGELING. But that slightly analog look on an uncompromising digital brain like the RED is a pretty powerful combination, I completely agree. The RED by itself has no character - that's imprinted on the RAW data by the lenses you use, and of course the lighting and story you are shooting. But for visual "personality", I think glass has as a lot to with the character of the image, which is why I think Super Speeds are really interesting, as are lenses like Leica R's, that have a very distinct "look" I think.

Happy shooting. I like this piece a lot. And yeah...the flares in particular are pretty great. Great job.
 
Great images, editing, and shot composition! I enjoyed that a great deal and empathize with the pain of having clients take away from projects. Been there!
