I see the question being asked in several places and hopefully we can consolidate it into this one thread. I can't make this a sticky but perhaps if it becomes a useful thread it could elevate to that status to keep everyone informed.

Here's what we know.
  • The Red One will not offer upgrade path to Dragon. Jim has stated the following.
The RED ONE had an upgrade path to EPIC.

Think of what options you had with any other camera company.

    Jim
  • The Red One WILL see future firmware upgrades, including Redgamma 3/Redcolor 3.
not sure what you guys are talking about, but RC3 and RC3 is coming to RED ONE...
  • Red One is still for sale in the Red Store as of today, April 17, 2012

As I learned earlier in another thread, better to let Jim or Jarred tell us what the future of Red One is rather than making assumptions, like I did with RG3.

So, for R1 owners, seems like the future is still bright as RED continues to stand behind the camera.
R1 will get a firmware update to add RC3/RG3 soon. We love the R1.. it is what started this all.

OK.. time to go eat.

I understand and appreciate the R1 to Epic upgrade path and I'm loving what the Epic can do. It's certainly more than any other camera company would do and i guess thats why we always, perhaps unreasonably, expect so much from them.

I was in stage 2 thinking that i would sell my R1 after getting my Epic. I think Jarred's email made me and a lot of others think that dragon was going to happen, so decided to keep it. I also thought that stage 2 would have a rental advantage in being closer to the front of the queue, but with so many Ms and the back orders that wasn't really the case. I guess I'm just annoyed with myself for not stage 3ing it.

As a non-technical person I can't help but think just put the scarlet bits in the Red One:) There's obviously a reason why this isnt posible and it would be great to hear a bit more from Red why MX is the end of the line sensor-wise. I'm sure they looked at it.

Cheers

Dave

I think R1 deserves something more than a few upgrades. I don't know technically how far the camera can go, but RED must consider the future of R1, at least for us who kept and not sale the camera according to stage 2.

Agree

What Gunleik said +1. I hope Red continue to keep R1 as up to date as it can to work with the latest software tools, and maybe even tweak the few remaining UI annoyances.

I really believed that the R1 would get the Dragon upgrade too so the recent announcements let me down.

At least the R1's monitoring colour-science should be upgraded. It's horrendous to see Epic and R1 feeds side by side in a two camera shot.

Why would you think that? Jannard said no Dragon for R1 ages ago.

As much as I would like to think of some sensor upgrade, I am perfectly happy with the RED ONE. I still am way ahead of the curve. Like I said before...look at your options right now when it comes to 4K from the other guys... for example, Sony’s NEX-FS700 needs optional 4K recorder via 3G HD-SDI? So complicated...In '09 I was getting 4K on a little CF card! I'm still winning....

Who is going to buy a new MX ?,knowone is the honest answer, and used one's are losing value daily.Sad to see

Jannard said that RED ONE owners would be sorry that they sold their camera to pay for Epic instead of keeping it, which as far as I know (and it hasn't been explained otherwise by RED), was simply a reference that those who were not getting in on the trade-up offer would be unhappy, and that is what caused all the unhappiness.

For all I know you may be right, but I still contend that the R1 has some advantages over the Scarlet, and if Red is going to update the firmware to include things like RG3/RC3 that certainly does make it still attractive. It falls right between the Epic and Scarlet price point, offers up to 4.5K, higher frame rates, self contained professional audio, multiple SDI outputs built in, a very nice 4KHD mode, etc. No doubt, things probably change with Dragon and if I were buying a camera right now, I'd probably aim for an Epic knowing that for $6K more in a year or so, I'll have a world class camera (Epic already is right now). But I can see R1s being useful for some people for a while. Buying used R1s right now, there are some amazing deals. Full shooting packages for very low money. Again, for the money I'd probably take a Red One complete shooting package over a Scarlet unless I absolutely needed the things Scarlet is very good at.

You may be right about new R1s, I just don't know. I don't have any data on how many they are selling.

LOL. It's about defining "Value". And why you own/buy/use a camera in the 1st place...

To me the R1 M has better value than most cameras I know of (which cost a lot more), because of the field of practical applications I have for it.

In many ways it has higher value today, than when I received it some 4 years ago.

A camera isn't a "stock like" investment. It's all about what you use it for, THAT is where the true value of a camera lays.

The prices of the R1 has been held incredibly high over an incredibly long period of time due to some incredible decissions by Jim and RED.
I love all that.
But realistically, that s not what usually happens.
I know of an F35 (allmost unused) that was offered for about 12.500$ last fall (just body and VF, but still)
That's another extreme... but it tells some about what RED has pulled off here...

Cheers!

Ive been pestering RED about if the R!MX will get RC3/Rg3 since it came out. Its a great b camera with my Epic and I have been able to match them in Scratch greatly just not on set so this is great to have the 2 match now. I'm cool with no sensor upgrade I think jim has been more than generous and Canon just proved that with this C500 crap they just pulled. Its gonna lose them some customers I bet. What will really put the R1 back on the map forever and INCREASE its value going forward is fixing the career ending boot up time. If they can make that 2 mins into 20 seconds then bobs your uncle in my book.
I hope they are listening.

Probably cannot happen without changing the whole computer... :)

But mention to me any other 2008 cam worth mentioning?

The increased fatness, DR and not the least latitude of the Epic over the R1 is fantastc, but if you shoot the Ones for thei're fat part of their exposure-range (like you'll have to do on any other cam I have used than Epic, really...), they look so good it is totally inctdible. And the skintones on the M is really really nice.

I do think that those of us to took Jim's comment about people selling their RED Ones would be sorry confused a whole lot of people. It certainly did me. I was certain that they'd allow us to upgrade again.

I'm quite certain that the new sensor will not be going into the RED One entirely for economic reasons rather than technical ones. I have more confidence in RED's technicians than that. And I know Jim does, as well.

As for prices, well, RED Ones these days look a lot like internet stocks in 2001. It's all downhill from here.
