  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi guys,

I need to bring my GMC Denali form Rome to Germany to get it registered as a European Vehicle, in Italy is just way to strict, and I was told in germany such process is much easier, also my SUV has Huge wheels and tires, which will never pass inspection here in Italy, but again I was told in germany they are much linear and the process only takes but a day or two.

So if there is any German or some one residing in Germany here on Reduser that speaks English as well or Italian, or Spanish, and knows this process and wishes to assist with compensation, please let me know.


Towns bordering Italy are of course preferred so I don't have to drive to up high in to Northern Germany... ;)

Hi Ketch,

Where is your driving license issued? If it's in Italy you may have an issue driving a German registered car in Italy. Generally you can have a problem driving a foreign registered car in the country your living in.
 
No problems here Stephen, I have a US Driver License, as well as an Italian and an International Driver License, also I will be only driving the German issued License plate back toRome, and on the day after I arrive I will register it in Rome, and have an Italian License plate issued.

Unless, you have a branch of your business in where the vehicle is registered and you can make proof you're using the car for service. A driver's labor contract at the glove compartment is normally a useful idea to have.

EDIT -- In the meantime, I see you already answered with your reply, Ketch. On insurance if you'll have no insurance already integrated with your german auto export fees as of 2007/2008 when I lived in Germany, you have these options:

The best solution is the 2nd one, you just need to say you crossed France in order to justify why you bought from them. They will ask you a french address though, nothing that a french friend may not able to help you out :-)

In theory you need to get special permission to drive the car at all in Italy, if you showed the US license & they discovered you had an Italian one it could get nasty.

The key is Ketch to identify himself as living abroad. He will be just fine then.
 
Thanks guys, truly much appreciated the replies and emails sent, very helpful indeed, I have not done this before obviously, and I am going about it as suggested by local people I talked to, no one in particular I really can't take their word for it, and for this posted here, and as usual Reduser delivers!!

It now seems that the best thing to do is just simply source an Importer, and do what ever changes to the vehicle as needed, including buying a new set of smaller Reims and tires so to make it look back to a Stock vehicle, as well as to let some one experienced do this, instead of travel cross countries for days not really knowing what is the real process of doing this, which at the end Germans can and will be more then a Pain in the A^%# then Italians, as they too are very strict in their policies.

I initially tough that by bringing this SUV in Italy, I would use it as I did in the US for both pleasure and work with out the need of a Sport Car and a Work Van... I kind of think now it was a bit of a mistake, however the cost of Gasoline is the last of my worries as I already knew that before end, and fortunately I do well in off not to worry about it, and also once registered in Italy, I will put a Natural Gas implant on it, mostly to save the environment, not money, and please don't absolutely any cone reply to me that if I want to save the environment I should have not purchased an SUV... ;)

believe me, any bureaucracy if I can call it like that in Germany is way better in north :-)

For some account, Germany is the wealthiest country of Europe. Everything works reasonably there, reason enough why Germany looks like a paradise compared with the south.

Ketch,

Did you officially declaire the car to customs as a personal import at the time you moved to Italy? If not it will require a European COC or br individually tested at huge expense. If you did, it's much easier to import as it's exempt from a European COC & many requirements.
 
Do you still Need me to look into it? I'll have more news by tomorrow if you want. As of today, it doesn't seem to be a problem to do that.
 
Yes of course I did Stephen, as it was in the same 40' container as all my other gear and personal items, so the car is imported, but I do need to nationalize it.

Please do Patrick, even so by the sonud of the emails received it seems that it will be even harder then to do it in Italy.
