  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet and 5D mkiii

I'll go on record as saying that skin tones aren't attractive thus far on most Red footage.

Bruce... I like most of your posts, but when I read this, I cringe....

Your shooting RAW mate... skin tones can be what ever you want them to be... GREEN, PINK, BROWN or AVATAR BLUE...
Don't get lost thinking what you see on a onset monitor is what you get... You can change anything to what ever you want with a touch of a button.
RAW r3Ds are not burnt in colour space... its RAW data, you can change your mind about the skin colour 4 years later...
Unlike PRO RES from Alexa or Canon 5d... Colour is baked in... What you get is what you get. if you shoot it warm... he get warm, no going back..

Here is a perfect example... I have purposely shot this at daylight Kelvin temps, 5600k set on the camera, 3200k lighting.. YUK!!!!. (I could have lit this properly and set the kelvin properly, but no proper lights on set to do so, so I left it as is... But does not matter, because I'm shooting in RAW and can change everything later)

I can disregard all that ugly colour bias and change it... I can change it to 3200k or what ever I desire... at any time.
I can make skin do what ever I want... when ever I want..
You can't do that with PRO RES or H264.. never... for the life of me I've tried.

Poeple have to stop saying skin looks better in certain cameras. When you have a choice of what skin colour you want in RED RAW ...
You all have to leave compressed VIDEO world and come into proper RAW data world to understand this...

Agree Mark. I'm no Colorist but love my Epic's skin tones. Haven't had much trouble getting the results I want with Redcine X.

Too bad, i need a good light back up camera.

Well, until any such 4K arrives to the market (sorry, I don't take a small sensor 4K seriously), have a look at the hacked Panny GH2. It's incredible value for money and can take a lot of wonderful legacy glass (you can even adapt PL). It can't touch the Scarlet's DR or gradability, but no camera with H.264 or MPEG-2 recording can. But if you light carefully and get close to the intended look in the camera, it can intercut nicely with Scarlet as long as you are finalizing in 1080 HDTV.

Use a very good SD card (Sandisk 64 GB / 95 MB/s) and the Sedna settings from Driftwood and you are in for a nice surprise!
