Hi everyone, getting ready to test my scarlet with a friends new 5d mk3. Anything in particular you all want to see? This is for fun and just to see how they each look respectively.

Looking forward to some of your suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

Hi William

id be interested to see what the rolling shutter is like on the mk3...
also what the latitude is like compared to the scarlet (without hrdx)

cheers

Yes. Canon have stated they have really stepped up the build quality with the III. So I'd really like to see these two cameras go head to head when it comes to this. How about he drops his 5D3 on top of your scarlet. Then you get to drop your Scarlet on top of his 5D?
I understand this might be a bit too much to ask. In which case, perhaps just the second half of the test would still be possible?

I kid, I kid :)))

Best

Lliam

Be careful with what your doing and posting it here... i've seen fires before on stuff like this

Fair enough. I hope no fires are started just a test to see how two different tools work.

Thank you all for the suggestions for far. I am going to begin compiling a list and update you once the video is complete.

HIGHLIGHT TONE PRIORITY enabled on the 5Dmk3... On the previous generation of Canon DLSRs it actually gave 1+stop highlight protection, but it made the shadows excessively noisy in video mode (too noisy to use in most high dynamic range situations, which is where you'd want to use it most.) With the "cleanliness" of high ISO video on the 5Dmk3, I'm wondering if it'll actually play nice this generation. Obviously keep it at All-I, since that should be much better looking and the cam will need all the help it can get.

Then compare that (presumably 11+ stops of DR) to non-HDRx Scarlet footage (13+ stops).

There's no point comparing resolution, but I'd also love to see Scarlet-X at a stupid-high 18:1 compression ratio (downscaled to 1080p) compared to 5Dmk3 All-I right out of the camera (again with HTP on.)

...OH, and, ideally, it'd be swell if you could make 5second clips (untouched, directly off the camera) available for download so we can play along at home.

Compare RAW footage from the Scarlet to RAW footage from the 5D3. Oh wait... what? :sarcasm:

Please - see which one makes it easier to get filmic skin tones.

One test I'd love to see is:
1. pick any good scene from a movie shot on film, with beautiful skin tones
2. try to set up a test shoot that matches the overall look roughly
3. see how easy it is to make the footage from the Scarlet and Mk3 look like that!

Thank you!

So much so that I got Ringo Starr shot on Red instead of F900 back in 2007!

But yes... as long as you don't confuse hating Red skin tones with hating Red...

I'll go on record as saying that skin tones aren't attractive thus far on most Red footage. It comes down to what was recorded - if it's there but needs a tweak in the grade, fine... if there is spectral information that is missing... not so fine. I don't care if I have a RAW image if the sensor didn't pick up what I wanted to capture!

RedColor3 is worth a look though since it seems to fix the red colors on Red. The red colors were just awfully desaturated - either brick or pink color. I always have to put a secondary/vector on them to fix 'em. Glad that RedColor3 fixes this! But I don't want just saturated reds fixed. I want subtle color detail in the skin tones - and as I said... if there's spectral info that's not recorded, or too much cross-talk, it may not be possible to recover from current Red sensor.

That's why I'm interested in what people find - what is the Canon sensor getting vs what is the Red sensor getting?

Of course, entire test needs to be repeated for Dragon though!

HO, crap, I mean even I got confused... I thought Millichamp meant you dislike overly-red coloured skin tones... not RED skin tones... It may have been clearer if he said you 'disliked MX skin tones...'

This thread was a kind gentle thread . . . before it died an early death

Nah, back on track!

So far, requests are for:
- rolling shutter
- latitude
- low light
- skin tones
- RAW (haha)
- dropping Scarlet onto 5D Mk3 (haha)

Looking forward to doing this. Will be setting up to shoot early next week. And just got my side handle allocation! But I'll still be borrowing one for the shoot.

Thanks everyone!

I read this review.

But it does not say favourable things about the camera being an improvement over the mark II. If that is the case, then it does not need to be compared. Too bad, i need a good light back up camera. Hopefully the 4k dslr will be something (not a 4k that records 2k) to compare.

Tried a 5D Mark III at CPS in Hong-Kong. Very limited time with the camera, but early impressions is good low light, still the amazing full frame DOF, but image is much softer than the Epic (which should be similar to Scarlet). Highlight roll off is also worse, but good news is much less moiré and aliasing- couldn't see any in the CPS setting, in fact. However, a big 52" Plasma was showing a HD video shot with the 5D of some sort of "Human Marionette" love story. It was clean, moire free, but very, very soft.

Low light is definitely better than the Mark II. My 5D Mark II is Clean until 800 ISO, with acceptable noise at 1280- the limit for my tolerance. Mark 3 Ups the game to 3200 ISO with the logical trade off of poorer color rendition, softer image/detail and dynamic range at that level of ISO- However, still relatively clean and usable.
