A future project can possibly involve recording to quicktime in a Prores 422 codec, therefore using an external device like AJA Ki pro mini or Sound devices PIX 240 and recording the HD SDI output. The target resolution would be 1080P25 16:9
My question : Is there a disadvantage in not using Red Cine X for the debayer process ? (I make any abstraction of the grading possibilities here)
In other words : is the demoniacing equally good ?

Thanks in advance

Philippe

My understanding from specific discussions I have read from RED is that the SDI out is full de-bayer, so there would be no advantage to running R3D thru RCX just for its debayer then to ProRes. An external recorder would seem to be the most efficient way to do this.

The quality of the HD-SDI out on the EPIC is exceptional. ProRes 422 doesn't do it justice.. ;)

Thanks for the info guys !
@Jeff : I know, sadly that is what they (production) want :(

True. At least on PIX and Samuri recorders. Expect similar with Ki-Pro too. Seems to be consensus that this is RED SDI-output issue and indications are RED intends to correct this on future firmware. So for the moment we (me, PIX owners, et al) need to uprez our HD files a few % to eliminate mask on top/bottom of frame...

*sigh*

An 8% blow up in 4khd is required to create a full frame 1920x1080 image and get rid of the black bar window. My understanding is that the next firmware release will address this issue.

I need 16 x 9. Clean feed at all resolutions with no letter box/ pillar box. Its the world standard for HDTV, and the TV producers demand it for finishing. Please. Spent much time conforming 16 x 9 frame guide cropping in transcode with mixed source resolution. Affects the day to day in so many ways. Time i could spend working on telling stories...not bogged down in the technical. Please...
