Isn't technology advancing at an amazingly rapid rate these days?

Its great :)

We live in privileged times to be part of this tech explosion.

who cares. real dp's are waiting for dynamic range not higher and higher resolution

better tools mean more possibilities. embracing new technology can make you the visionary. neophobes do not change the world, neophiles do.

Only 11 stops in 2010

Only 11 stops in 2010

According to the articles, the chip has a 12-bit ADC, which translates to (at best) 11 stops. It's also a 2010 implementation.

The chip is targeted to the NHK 8K4K "Super Hi-Vision" video program. NHK is working to understand and meet the challenges of capturing and displaying (live) 4k video. Reading between the lines, the 120Hz frame rate was necessary to reduce motion blur (cause of significant video compression problems) to acceptable levels. If you can't see the seams on the baseball (or the black panels on an association football), you may may as well watch the action in 720p.

yeah that's unfortunately not even close to enough anymore 11 stops is DSLR range. useless

Saw this chip working in a camera at NAB 4 years ago....
The images were so sharp, I thought I was looking out a window.

They had aerial footage and a super bowl game playing, it literally felt like I was there.

Was simply amazing....

And the big thisng was, nobody gave it a second look - WEIRD!

For starters, even in 2012, 11 legitimate stops above the noise floor is hardly deserving of disdain and has been sufficient to create some of the tastiest images ever shot.

Secondly, the idea that anyone can speak on behalf of "real DPs" with absolutist statements about how its all about the DR and none of them care about resolution lacks credibility and defies logic.

Is DR more important than resolution to the vast majority of DPs? Probably, but this is not an either/or proposition.

Cheers = #19

You guys haven't seen anything yet...
