Hi guys. I need your advice regarding the RPPs. We have 2 sets of Ultra Primes and set B (12,24,32,50, 85,180) lacks the 16mm and 135mm. I have been reading good reviews about the RPPS and I've been thinking of recommending the purchase of the RPP 18mm and 100mm to fill in the gap of the 16mm and 135mm Ultra Prime. Ultra Primes are so expensive and we are on a tight budget nowadays. I don't care about the size and the weight or the focus/Fstop mark, I'd like to know if anyone has shot/used with both lenses (specially on the same project/shoot) your opinion. Thanks in advance!

Well since we don't have any sign of a release date for the 135mm RPP I'd say your options are slightly more limited.
The real difference will be the size and weight of the RPPs Vs. the UPs. Also it seems like the current RPPs are EOL.

Hi Evin, thanks for the prompt reply. The size and weight does not matter, I was thinking more of the image quality. I just wanted to hear from someone who has experienced using both. No problem with the 100mm, the 180mm is a bit overkill specially when shooting inside a small studio.

I have both sets and first thing I noticed that while the RPPs are very sharp and sturdy I prefer the bookeh of the UPs. They have a more filmic look if that makes any sense. Other than that I would recommend RPPs for anyone who wants a cheap(er) very sharp and fast lens.

Thanks Mohamed! It's actually hard to test the RPPs here in Manila since I only know of one set (belongs to another production house) so it's not easy to get our hands on one so we can do an actual side by side test with the Ultra Primes. I want to make sure before I make a recommendation for the purchase that it is compatible with the Ultra Primes that we have here.

IF you have a set of Ultras, and you only need to fill in two lenses, stick with the UPs. The look will not match. They really are two different beasts all together.

Your focus and iris gears will be in different places, which will slow you down because you have to adjust the FF each time. Are the lens diameters the same? If not you will have to dick around with MB changes each time you change lenses.

We use our 16mm UP a lot with EPIC. The 135, not so much. So if you are on a budget, just get the 16... and maybe a 100mm.

I'd actually consider selling the 12 and 180 if you want to get two lenses. That's pretty damn wide. And as you said 180 is long for interior work. A good set would be 16, 24, 32, 50, 65, 85, 100.

If your 180 is an LDS, I'd be interested ;)

My 2 cents ;)

@Mark: Thanks very much for the information Mark. Selling the 12mm and 180mm is out of the question as it get's used a lot when shooting exterior, thanks for the interest though. I understand what you're saying, our Set A is from 16mm - 135mm and that really gets used a lot. I guess I'll just have to push for the 16 and 135 Ultras.
@Jon: No idea how much a 12mm Ultra is going for nowadays but when we got ours 7 years ago it was something like $22,000.00 US.

My set is 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 50, 65, 85, 100, 135. (LDS)

I'm thinking about selling the 28 and getting a 40mm instead. And I really want a 180 ;)

One of the best lenses out there...

Are there any video or pictures of the different looks like you are talking about? Love to see the difference.
