Currently building a buying package for the Scarlet-X. I've compiled the following list of items, but I wanted to check with you pros to make sure that I'm not buying something that I won't be able to use (or that I'll need additional items to use). I have a heavy duty tripod with a good head already, so not worried about that. Here's what I got:

Scarlet-X PL Mount w/ Side SSD ONLY
17-50mm Lens
REDVOLT 4 Pack (x2)
Redvolt Charger (x2)
REDMAG 64gb (4 Pack)
Redmote
Matte Box w/Cage
Top/Bottom Matte Box Flags
Sliding Top Handle
100mm SWAT Rail
Gunner
Gunner Handle Pack x2
Red 5.0" LCD
Red Station REDMAG
DSMC Side Handle
RED Scarlet Case

So a couple questions right off the bat...I saw the Scarlet cage, but not sure what exactly I'd use it for. Could someone explain? Also would the 18-85mm be better, or the 17-50mm? I know some of it is preference, and situational, but as a general rule?

Any other issues you notice with the setup? Thanks!

EDIT: Reflecting Peoples suggestions.

1. Cage - not needed, just get the DSMC TOP PLATE

2. Better go for 17-50 and 85 RPP if you can spare the extra cash

3. You will need much more media - at the very least 2 more 64GB cards - ideally add 1x 64GB + 2x 128GB

4. POWER. You will need either a lot more REDVOLTS (and chargers), or the RED BRICKS (at least 3) and V-lock Charger + a V-lock plate of sorts (minimum the DSMC BELT CLIP)

5. TOP HANDLE - to carry the camera - get the TOP SLIDING HANDLE with 100mm SWAT RAIL (or get 3rd party one)

6. MATTE-BOX - either get the MB without the cage and only a TOP FLAG, or if You are getting the cage make sure to get the SIDE FLAGS too, otherwise the cage doesn't make sense...

Others can fill in more stuff...

That's not a bad package though I have some suggestions for you.

Re the Clutch - Yes that's an amazing shoulder rig, though it's very expensive. You may be better off getting a monopod solution or a cheaper shoulder rig so you can put more money into more glass and batteries.
Re: 18-85 - That is a great and amazingly clear lens, though it is a HEAVY beast. You can forget doing handheld work with it. Would definitely recommend the 17-50 as a starter lens if you're going RED lenses. Or you can pick up some Zeiss glass as well.
Re: Mattebox - Lots of red users love the O'Box. It's great and it's priced competitively. I personally have Shoot35's MB, and love it. Quick to clamp on, and incredibly light.

I don't know that you need a cage. There are lots of alternatives out there for cheese plates, which is what most red users use. Wooden camera has some great products.

You are definitely going to want to add batteries, so you will probably want to invest in a V-Mount or AB mount solution. The REDVOlts are great, but go quick. You will need at least 10 of them (I have 16) to last a day because you will only get about 20-25 mins.

Hope this helps.

The cage gives you more mounting options and configurations. I have been thinking about investing in a cage myself. It also add another layer of protection from scratches, bruises and bumps.

You may want to invest in more RED MAGS. I have two 64gigs and I wish I had at least four total. One RED MAG just doesn't cut it.

Okay, thanks for the suggestions so far. I updated the post to reflect what's been said. More batteries and more storage being the main thing. :)

Don't forget to add the DSMC TRAVEL CHARGERs for the REDVOLTS (You need at least 4 total) and the lens is 17-50, not 17-55... ;o)

And trust me about the TOP HANDLE - try to find a pic of the camera here on the forum without one (whether RED or 3rd party)...

Bah, wasn't paying attention. I replaced the 8 with 7, but not the 5 with 0. :P Okay, I added a couple chargers. With the base pack and 2 chargers I'll have 3 total. I think that will suffice in these scenarios.

Question, for studio shooting, is there a way to hook the camera directly up to power? Also, Chris mentioned a V mount or AB solution for batteries? What are those?

5. TOP HANDLE - to carry the camera - get the TOP SLIDING HANDLE with 100mm SWAT RAIL (or get 3rd party one)

Peter

+1 for SURE!

I am so glad I got the sliding top handle! It's a great point of contact to move or carry the camera, and makes mounting the LCD onto the camera a SNAP via the handle connecting to the SWAT rail.

Ahh, one I overlooked when adding things onto the list after suggestions. Thanks for bringing it up again. Adding now.

The camera comes with AC power adaptor - so You can hook that up to a set's mains - I would however consider a small UPS between your gear and the set's power...
The V-mount is where You would connect the big RED BRICKS (the cheapest option is the DSMC BELT CLIP), but since You are going the REDVOLT's direction, don't worry about it...

Perfect. Got a UPS already just for these types of situations, figured the Scarlet had power somehow but they are so customizable that I want to make sure I'm on top of it. I've heard good and bad things about the REDMOTE. Thoughts of the necessity of it?

Mine one works great - no complains. I love it and use it all the time. With my giant fingers it makes navigating the menus a breeze, unlike the TOUCH LCD...
Even if you ended up having some issues - it will work great on the back of your camera (and protect the connectors on the back in the process). You can be sure RED will eventually iron out all the issues with the REDMOTEs...

IMHO - a must...

Okay, sweet. Just checked on the backorders and new products, there's a DSMC Top Handle...I'm wondering if I should wait to see what that is before getting a sliding top handle.

And just realized from the other thread - you are buying the LCD as part of the package. Either ask your bomb-rep if they can ship it with 12" cable instead of the included 7", or buy the 12" as an extra.
I ended up buying my camera separate from all the accessories so I can customize the items (there is no advantage in buying the package). For example since you are buying the 4-pack 64GB REDMAGs - you don't need the MEDIA PACK, just get the REDSTATION separate (and get the new Mini version unless you are on Windows), it will save you a bit of money... You will also get the 12" LCD cable as default...

Hmm. I'll have to go over it and look at that. Oh well, I'm heading out of the office, I'll do a revision tonight and see what I can do to save me money. :) Thanks so much for the help so far.

Peter, just to hijack the thread a bit about the top handle...
is there a way to attach the display to the swat rail, once it takes the place on top of the camera?
The 100mm is almost the same width as the camera, correct? so I could offset the LCD with a 140 swat, right? Would I need a clamp for the LCD to attach?

Thanks, Patrick

Yes - the 100mm just goes over the sides about 5mm on each side when centered. You could use the longer SWAT rails to mount the display to either side, but You will need at least this:

If You mount the LCD to the side of this clamp (opposite to the wingnut) - you could even mount it upside-down for shoulder mount - but only when RED enables the image flip in the LCD... :o(

The extended SWAT might create problems when you try to store and transport the camera though...
