  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED PRO PRIMES due for imminent update?

Peter,

The whole set has disappeared because they can't sell it without 50mm which is a common lens.

I think RED decided to redesign that lens. I always thought it is a bit different then other ones.

I really like their performance.

But why would then Jarred say the "get them while you can..."? That's why I think its more then just an update of the 50mm...

What ever it is going to be - I am sure it is going to be great, that much we should all know by now...

Peter

...Something tells me that the value of my RPP set just went up. ;)

Even if the value of my set doesn't increase - I at least know that they will probably hold their value very well over time. (just based on what other PL mount cine lenses go for even with 25+ years of use)
I heard someone lamenting the fact that they now had RPP's that were 'Obsolete' - as if they would suddenly stop working and be useless...

I see something here I don't like very much.

Now I have a background in the IT world. In high-end IT, we're used to road maps, phased changes, and advance notice of product being EOLed / withdrawn from marketing.

With RED, it seems, things silently disappear from the website.

This, I humbly submit, is not professional or appropriate. I love RED, but I'm not an uncritical fanboy; some things they still need to work on to get right. This kind of situation is one of them.

If RED came out with EF mount Cine/Still Lenses, they would make a killing!

I get your point - I was building a set and the day that I received shipping notice that my 50mm was on a FedEx truck, was the day the 50mm was pulled from the store… I now have a full set, but I would be fairly upset if I couldn't get the last piece of the puzzle because I was unable to make informed decisions.

+1

Exactly - this sends the message to not buy Red products piecemeal - to treat Red like Costco - if you see it, buy it cause it might be gone next time you look. Not the way professionals are used to buying.

And for the RPP owners out there, how does it feel to know that if your 50mm gets lost, stolen or heavily damaged there is no way to replace it? That the loss of one lens suddenly makes your entire lens package unrentable?

For all those who say a release is imminent... I point to the Red Drive situation. It could be months or years before another lens is available. And with no roadmap and no communication there is no way to tell.

Well I hope they sell a new set of RPP's, been saving for the current set and now, I guess I have to wait for a new set or used.

Thanks for your support... but that's actually a bad example. It was trailed, here and on the RED store, that stocks were getting limited, this would be your last chance to buy a Drive, there would be no more - and I got one of the very last 640GB Drives they shipped. That's how it should be done.

But the 50mm, the metric 300mm, and the 50-150mm zoom simply disappeared; one day we got up and they were gone. You needed one? Tough... hope one comes up in the used market.

RED guys, please communicate. And I mean more professionally than a 'get them while you can' hint from Jarred *after* the product has gone from the store.

I was more referring to the fact that just because there is a hole in the Red product lineup, doesn't mean that a new product will be released immediately to fill it.

But, I don't think it was quite as you remembered it....

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?48419-Red-Drives - None of those that posted comments regarding the EOL of red drives seem to know it was coming.

I bought my last Drive in early February 2011 (after checking carefully to make sure it would work on EPIC/Scarlet(!) ). I'm certain that at that point the Drive page on the RED store was clearly stating 'limited stocks - last few remaining' or words to that effect.

And Brent said...

100% Agree. I'm a RED fan boy, and this is something that the studio/production guys just laugh/grimace at me for (since my other hat is a finance guy, i'm sure they laugh at me after I'm out of the room though).

Can you imagine waking up one day, then not being able to buy a 50mm Panchro, CP.2 , or Arri master primes - without any comment from Arri or Zeiss or Cooke - it just wouldn't happen.

As I type this my brother and I are waiting on our front porch for the FedEx truck. Come on, RPPs! We decided that we love these lenses (both in terms of quality and value for money) and decided just to go with them even if they are being updated soon. The presence of newer lenses won't diminish for us how good these ones are. :)

A set plus an 18mm. We have a few EF zooms (24-70L, 70-200L, Tokina 11-16), but no other PL glass. The great irony is that we have had our Scarlet for nearly two months with a PL mount, but miscalculated when our Ti Canon mount would be shipping (we figured that it might be delivered shortly after our Scarlet) so we've had to rent lenses in the interim. Now it turns out that our Canon mount and RPPs are arriving on the same day. In retrospect we could have planned this better, but we're really excited to test everything all at once this afternoon/evening and over the weekend. :)

Well I have spent all day playing with them and they are terrific. The 50mm leaves me lost for words. It's just so sharp and it functions as a wonderful macro lens as well.

I'm quite saddened by Reds lack of response on the matter, I started acquiring a set, and got no warning that the 50 mm would go out of production. It seems like it will be hard to put a complete set together now...

...please RED, give us a word!

I log onto this every day in the hope of seeing some information on what direction RED intends to go with their lenses and it is really disappointing that so far this has been futile.
