  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

15mm Rod plate for mattebox & FF

Lets not forget Red's QR system. I just picked up my modular assault plate and quick release dovetail from Red and love it. The great part about this is the ability to run 15 LWS and 19mm setups with not much extra cost

I just ordered the assult plate when did you order yours? Just trying to get a gage for when I might see it. Also I'm surprised 3rd parties are not designing there own quick release systems it was the deciding factor for me to use Red components.

@Adam, the rig you suggested wouldn't work for me, it is missing the two most important aspects of a handheld rig: camera weight must be on the should, not in front and the handles must extend down to the hips. For me that's the prerequisite for any handheld rig that carries more than a lightweight hdslr.

Why on earth do the handles need to extend down to your hips? Sorry, that's just ridiculous.

You're not the polite type huh.
I suppose the answer would be: Because our arms are that long.
Eventually it's a thing of personal taste, but I think you can observe on other cameramen's configurations and from experiencing the difference yourself that extended handles will allow better control, longer and more steady handheld work and the heavier the rig gets the more necessary extended handles will become. I can't claim that this option is good for you, but I would invite you to try it.

The problem is that if you have the camera on the shoulder you will find it very hard to get to the lens as the body on the epic and scarlet is so short. The weight on the rig I described will be perfectly balanced and can also be fine tuned but sliding the Zacuto Zwiss plate with batteries up and down on the 15mm bars.

Regarding the long handlebars, that is a matter of preference. i personally like to have my hands up close to the lens, I often hold onto the matte box in fact.

Anyway, that's the thing about rigs, they are very personal. I am not sure I am going to go with this setup yet. Considering Wooden Camera as well. Cheers, Adam

Agreed on so many levels.

Sorry, link for belt on right hand side of the page. They are in the same URL!

Yep! It is one of those bits of Kit that seems under-priced for what it does. When I have a camera on my shoulder and just want to adjust the angle of handle I can do it without taking my eye off the viewfinder.

The one thing I am trying to fix is to get the lens as low as possible in the shoulder mount configuration. The Porta brace is great but adds a bit too much height IMHO
Adam - your earlier post with the Zacuto based rig was very useful. I'd almost decided on the Zacuto solution, and it's re-enforcing my decision.

Did you find a solution you liked better than the Porta brace?

I'm completely starting from scratch, so I'm also looking at adding either the O-Box WM or Shoot35 MB, and the Cinevate Durus FF.

Any issues come to mind when using those products with your rig?

Also have to get rods, and leaning towards carbon fiber from Cinema Oxide or RedRock. Unsure if there are alternate/better choices.

I get the impression that Carbon Fiber will have the least flex as well as almost weightless, but ... I'm still trying to get up to speed on rods.

Thanks!

Hi Les,

Sorry for the late reply, I have not been on RU much as I have been working. I actually decided to go with Element Technica as I want the option to upgrade to 19mm down the road. I read somewhere that the Zacuto baseplate had some issues with thr rods slipping. not sure if it is accurate or not but be sure to test it if you can. Cheers, adam

I think that was with someone who had issues with their hand grips slipping on the front rails.

I was curious if it had anything to do with the rods, whether some rods had more friction than others?

I probably intended to replace the Zacuto supplied rods anyway, as I don't think they are carbon fiber.

Apparently, rods are different in that aspect. CinemaOxide outlines some of the differences here:
