Is anyone shooting anamorphic on Scarlet X?
I have been testing and am unsure about the best workflow- I am shooting 4kHD with a 4:3 frame guide in camera. In RedCineX Pro I am using the framing tab to select the 4:3 guide. This gives me a 2880x2160 output frame from the 3840x2160 which is a considerable loss of footage real estate. Is this the best way to go currently?
I wish we could get closer to the 2700 height of the 5k framing- is this how Epic's anamorphic mode works?

I noticed a point on the 2.0.8 firmware-
"5K ANA clips not supported in playback"
Did I miss something? I am using 2.0.5- as shipped.

cheers,

Being able to rent anamorphic lenses and use them with a 3600x2700 crop of the sensor (or even something close) would be quite useful for certain types of projects. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know whether that's even a possibility on the Scarlet's hardware. If you do some simple arithmetic then you get this...

3600x2700 = 9,720,000
4086x2160 = 8,825,760

That means that the anamorphic window we're talking about represents a little over 10.13% more pixels then 4k. In 4k we can shoot up to 25fps and I'm not sure how taxed the Scarlet-X's hardware is when doing this or even if this is the right way to think about whether the type of mode we're talking about is a possibility. If one of our more knowledgeable users wouldn't mind shedding some light on this idea then that would be great.

Thanks,
Nick

Actually Epic 5K Anamorphic mode uses 3296x2700 (8,899,200) while 4K Scarlet uses 4096x2160 (8,847,360). They are very close in terms of pixel data so Scalet should be able to handle 5K anamorphic up to 24FPS if not 25FPS if this mode is enabled for Scarlet.

That's excellent to know. Thank you, Jay. I just assumed that a 4:3 aspect ratio on an image 2700 pixels high would mean an image 3600x2700 in size. Shows how much I know. :P

3600x2700 would be also helpful for DSMC Still photographers who may not need 1.9:1 aspect ratio.

I really hope this 3296x2700 mode is introduced in the next update... or some sort of user defined area of the sensor- 4:3 based on Scarlets hardware restrictions.
Apart from that, I love this little beast.

+2

This would be even better if they rolled out an update some time this week! I have a job coming up that I would love to shoot on the Scarlet! Anamorphic only though =/

I think this is one of those features that won't get implemented in Scarlet... 4k ANA sure, but 5k ANA breaches into Epic territory.

That said, I would love to see it happen (as much as I would love to see 4k HDRx happen.)

If I have the right information, there's no ANA mode on Scarlet, so you get a frame guide on top of the vertically stretched image.

How do you overcome that in order to properly monitor what you're shooting in the first place?

Yes - no Ana on Scarlet yet. Only way to monitor in the correct A/R is to run the outboard HDMI/HD-SDI to a monitor that has the ability to squeeze the image.

Also, there's a lot more cropping/resize work to be done by shooting 2X on 2K/3K/4K (etc) - the 5K Ana mode on the Epic is a lot simpler to post.

Let's hope for 4K/3K Ana on the Scarlet and adding 4K/3K Ana to the Epic too.

Only time will tell, but I see no reason for RED to not enable 5k Ana on Scarlet if it's doable.

They make cameras for professionals. Scarlet is a professional camera, but it's not going to infringe on Epic at all. Epic is, well, epic. Besides, both cameras are RED, so it's a win / win for them, no? I feel like they're a company that cares about making the best cameras possible - that means making Scarlet the best it can be and Epic the best it can be.

I can't see 5KAna on a Scarlet. However, I expect 4KAna (as per RED ONE) is where RED will fall on this.

I'd imagine that all 'motion' 5K flavours will be kept on the Epic & Scarlet will be 5K 'stills'... just my thoughts really, as it doesn't make business sense to let the Scarlet move into Epic 5K motion territory.

Well in that case; 3296 x 2700 is actually 1.22 pixel aspect ratio (for a 2.44:1 when unsqueezed using traditional 2x anamorphic lenses). Ergo, if they went with 3172.5 x 2700 (1.175, which would equal 2.35:1) or even 3240x2700 (which is 1.2 PAR for 2.4:1 using 2x anamorphic lenses), both would be under the 4096x2160/8,825,760 pixel budget of Scarlet 4k... In fact, 3240x2700 only equals 8,748,000, almost 100,000 pixels less than 4K, but it allow us to use the entire vertical height of the sensor (which is where the hotness is at) and maximize anamorphic quality.

Ev,
would you be able to post any footage of your test? Also, could you describe your post workflow?

George, I haven't got anything online yet. Because I have been using the 4:3 frame guides I have to export to another format (usually prores) but I would rather use the R3Ds in premiere which is much faster on my rig. Does anyone know if R3Ds can be baked out with a hard crop based on the guides??? I tried exporting a R3D trim but that doesn't take into account the frame guide crop. Trying to find the best possible way to do this until (hopefully) we get a 4:3 ana mode. Am I doing this right??

Ev - why not set a new Premiere Project with a custom resolution? That way, you'll just edit your R3D's.

You say you framed in 4:3 on 4K (using your Ana) - so you have spare screen real estate to the left & right (by choice)? Just trying to understand how you've worked - basically you have shot and are looking to (correct me if I'm wrong), take a 4:3 extraction from a 16:9 4K image, as you used Ana lenses?

So, create a new project in custom, set the screen resolution to your desired pixel size and set the aspect ration to X2 (and don't allow footage resize). That should get you there...?

I don't have Premiere or any R3D's on this laptop to test... but the above option should allow you to edit without the hassle of a transcode?
