  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Closing down threads should be done with caution !

. . . even a canon can't kill a Dragon

Ray,

It was shut down because it added to the noise of reduser. It had been decided a good while ago that reduser.net would focus on cameras by RED, and that all discussion about other cameras should be done on other sites, such as dvxuser.com. After all, this is reduser, not nikonuser or sonyuser.

This has nothing to do with fanboyism — just another attempt at keeping this forum somewhat focused. Discussing other cameras is still o.k. as long as it has something to do with RED, for example when discussion workflows with mixed footage. That particular thread just talked about the announced new 5D Mk III, information about which you could find on any remotely photography/video related website blog today.

We've had plenty of similar discussions before, a quick search threw up these two: here or here.

best way to answer this, why go on REDuser.net if you wanna talk about canon, arri etc? this forum is everything red and nothing in between. Simple

Because reduser is perhaps the most interesting place online on earth (we have no idea about other galaxies anyway :D) dedicated to the production of imagerie where there are so many who can help others to learn. Latter group of which I include myself. Sometimes, that's the best chance to do a unique workshop, unusual anywhere else. Or unavailable as you wish, granted the fact only here, it is possible to find the same people who we are used to read and appreciate their generosity. Outside, there are other interesting posters, who doubts? But not the same bunch of buddies, for sure.

However, Tom who once posted a reason enough to accept anything over reduser, since this community is basically work of two men:

«Bottom line is that Jim does not want us posting about "other cameras" here anymore. He made that crystal clear last night. Since this is his house, we should respect that.»

This time, the same Tom (also mod in these boards) had given his green light on the discussion with the premise this could be restricted to the still photography domain.

For some reason, I even posted an ISO example of 51200 sample going on directly to where the video mode is not even implemented. And comparing with the predecessor 5DII, not else. Unfortunately, Martin didn't think the same as many of us. I also second his intelligent remark that reduser can only gain if focused on topic, though.

In any case, there is an off-topic section quite different than cinematography.com as for instance, where only topics related to the industry are comprehended there, rather than here, where sometimes pops up the most silly threads on the various distinct subjects, not related to RED nor this business or craft.

That said, to discuss about capture devices other than RED such as a tool like 5DIII that can be really useful to a reduser as B-cam (or even BTS material as you wish), it doesn't seem to me rather off-topic enough to even fit this section :P Sorry to not be able to agree in everything all the time :-)

Just another RED user's example:

But to be able to discuss the camera dedicated to still acquisition would already be welcome.

Back before the policy was in effect there was a certain executive from a competing company who would come here to openly and covertly subvert the forum to suit his own purposes. That just may have been the kicker.

It doesn't take a lot of consideration to realize that it really is a sound policy.

I see products that work with RED being posted so I decided to post a rig we were working on a little while back.

At first my post was removed, which I understood... I figured I must have posted in a wrong category by mistake, but there is no way to delete posts either.

So I posted in Jobs / Equipment for Hire and my account got banned. Nobody answered any of my messages either.

This was my post, which can be found through google ;)

I think discussing still photography and still lenses, etc, has always been accepted here. Jim has engaged in these discussions. What is not acceptable here is comparing Red cameras to DSLRs, etc. It always leads to a big food fight, and Jim asked us not to do it, which is why I posted a strict warning at the beginning of the 5D3 thread telling members to keep the discussion to still photography. Some people did not listen, and Martin exercised his judgement here. Some of the earlier "Canon vs Red" threads from a year or two ago brought a lot of shame and disgrace to this forum, and Jim put his foot down on this type of embarrassing behavior, and rightly so. It was giving all of us a bad name.

Given the sometimes lord of the flies nature of some other forums i do agree with Jims policy.....you still can learn heaps and have fun....i think anyways....peace

Until Canon won't launch the promised 4K of their last announcement from last November, I believe there's nothing to compare between them (HD) and RED (5K/4K). Bikes and cars don't require not even the same driver's license :-) Differents in everything. Despite and beyond the DSMC concept, we cannot compare a compact camera or a mobile phone with a DSLR either. And in this case, both take still pictures, when not clips/motion too.

Fair enough.

These keywords come to mind:

"X vs. Y threads"
"Nov. 3rd 2011"
"Engadget"

Slightly related to this topic----dumb question:
How do you delete a post that YOU started? I'd like to clean up a few old equipment for sale posts, and can't figure out for the life of me how to delete them. I hit edit/delete, but only see editing options.
Thanks!

Click edit, then choose Go Advanced. Look at the very top. There is a checkbox for deleting. That works for posts, but I can't say about editing an original thread.
