  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Powering the Epic

Can you use the red brick charger with the 2b-1b adapter?

Yes indeed. That's just the same as using the Red One AC unit and I had it confirmed by Red that they are compatible with Epic (it's the same voltage).

I'm planning to use a V-mount battery on the back of the Epic. I ordered a battery plate and adapter plate from Cinema Oxide. Jason was really great to deal with, highly recommended.

I ordered two of the 230wh batteries from Globalmediapro.

Despite an extra couple pounds, I think this config will be great for handheld and balance the camera a little better... not so front heavy...

Peter,
I've just posted my setup in another thread, but I can strongly recommend Action Products Proteus & Electra power set-up.
Yes it's expensive, but worth it.
The hot swap batt function is genius (4-5min constant power with batt off the camera)
You can run V-lock or AB batts, or you can plug in a brick via 4 pin XLR connector.....
Great module, with lots of options...
Cheers

I would like to poll the forum regarding powering the Epic. From my perspective, unless I am handholding, I would rather just use an anton Bauer Cine-X block which will last all day on the dolly. If I am shooting alone for tests or my own work I use the side handle and 4 RedVolts.

Peter,
I am 100% behind your intended approach. From most of the responses, I don't think that your question is being understood.

I own and use the Anton/Bauer VCLX series batteries. Proven performers.

I've had mine slightly customized to give me a high degree of flexibility.

I have one of the larger units (VCLX) which is set up with (3) 4-Pin 14V connectors.
Allows me to power a camera and 2 other devices looking for 14V (or) power up a full sound cart / DIT station / monitor all day.

I also have two of the smaller units (VCLX/2).
Each has a 4-Pin 14V connector.
The other connector on each is a 28V output. One has a 3-Pin XLR type connector, the other has an amphenol 2-Pin for a HMI DC Ballast.

If you have the financial flexibility, you might consider (2) of the VCLX/2 batteries even though the temptation would be there to just carry one of the larger VCLX.
Either choice (2-VCLX/2 or 1-VCLX) would cover the full day on a dolly - but we all stop for lunch at some point - and I always like the idea of having one on the charger when the other is in use.
It provides the ability to make it through a "perpetual power" scenario. Had to do this last fall with the REDOne before my EPIC arrived. Continuously powered up recording a timelapse over 30 hours in length. One VCLX/2 on the camera, one on the charger - it worked. Discussed this in another thread when someone else made an inquiry about another block battery that was popular for film cameras at 28V (though they do make 14V as well).

If you go this route and want to find out about specifying the type of connectors, send me a PM.
