Hi guys, quick question.

How do you power your 1.8" REDMAG when you don't have access to AC power?

I know it can be bus powered with FW800 but I want to use eSata for maximum speed. Can it be powered through FW800 but have the data go through eSata? In that case, my other problem is that the MBP I'm using only has one FW800 port and I need that to power the HDD that I'm transferring the data to. Can I daisy chain the HDD and REDMAG with FW800 and power both that way? (While transferring over eSata through a CalDigit expresscard.)

All the REDMAG is asking for is a simple 5V DC with the right plug so I'm thinking I could come up with a battery solution but hopefully someone else has already figured this out...

Cheers
Jonas

Hey Jonas,
I can't remember what thread I saw it on.. But there is a USB plug that will go in to the Redmag reader. Simple cheap solution.

One more work around... plug in the eSATA cable then plug in a FW cable. The reader will use FW for power and eSATA for data. Read that right here on RU I did... totally works.

Thanks Chris! I was just wondering that. Chris maybe you could answer this for me... If I plug in a G tech Raid 0 through FireWire to my MacBook pro.. And the Red station through esata to the back of the drive, will I still achieve esata speeds?

Lol Andrew beat me too it.. I have my red station but haven't opened the box.. I didn't even know it came with the wire lol..

Haha, yep, that's how I've been powering my RED Station ever since I got it. The included power supply has a US plug on it, who would have thought!

I'm pretty sure that won't even work... It would work with FireWire because it supports daisy chaining but eSATA doesn't. The drive's eSATA port is probably expecting to be talking to a computer, I doubt it would be capable of hosting another device.

Thank you Andrew.. I didn't think it would.. Wishful thinking lol.. I'm just trying to find a faster solution than FireWire 800. I wish my damn MacBook pro had esata or thunderbolt.

If you have a MBP that takes an expresscard you can use eSata like I'm planning to? The Caldigit eSata expresscard gives you two eSata ports, one for the REDMAG and the other for the destination, in my case a bus powered RAID-1 drive.

Thanks Jonas but unfortunately it's a 15inch MacBook pro with no expresscard otherwise ur solution above would be ideal.
