The contributions to the thread on matteboxes got me wondering in general about filters. What are the "must haves" for the Scarlet?

IMHO ... You could easily start off with ...

Optical Clear
ND.3
ND.6
ND.9
ND1.2
Polarizer (Make sure you purchase a circular polarizer if you want to maintain the ability to use autofocus)

If you have money left after that ... ND grads are a great tool to have in your bag.

I'm not sure how completely necessary the Hot Mirror filters are now with the Epic and Scarlet, but they might be a good idea if you like to use heavy ND filtration.
BTW. Most manufacturers make an ND1.5 ... 1.8 ... 2.1 and ND2.4 filter as well. :)

You should ask Evin Grant's opinion. He has conducted a lot of filter testing.

I have a similar set of filters(all Tiffen 4X5.65) for my Scarlet.

Optical Clear
ND .6
ND .9
IRND 1.2
IRND 1.5
Circular Polarizer

With thses filters combined, I can make NDs from 0.6 to 2.4 (ND.9 & IRND 1.5 combined).

Jay, do you find that non IRND is acceptable under 1.2 in terms of IR contamination? I'm looking at assembling a filter set similar to yours.

Yes. And you can look at the filter test results posted on other threads.

Schneider Linear True-Pol Polarizer. must have for day exterior shooting. works wonders on blue skies, unwanted reflections, and also doubles as an ND filter.
