I figure shooting 4K, I should up my game on the mic I use to record sound, so I started to looking for a better way to record. An audio engineer buddy told me about homophone, and its ability to record 5.1 channels into two (hint, the two sound jacks on the front of the Epic/Scarlet) and then split it back out to 6 channels in post.

Any opinions? the $999 unit looks good, and there is a workflow for FCP

Thanks

Great article on using the Holophone Portamic Pro with 5.1 sound recording for my #r3d #scarlet with #FCP http://t.co/ZwJpCEan

Normally you would not record 5.1 unless it is a live event, or capturing ambiance.
Typically you will end up capturing all sorts of crew and equipment sound on the set.

Record all key characters/elements on discreet mono channels and use a mixer in post to create your 5.1 sound stage.

Concentrate more on better mics, Multi-channel recorders, or other equipment that will make it easier to capture the audio elements that are key to the scene.
