  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Audio problems

The stereo Hosa cable is a balanced cable. And it conforms to Red's spec exactly.

In fact, cables aren't really balanced or unbalanced at all. Inputs and outputs are balanced, and the cable has to be wired to pass those signals properly. The Hosa XVS102F (stereo cable) does that. Just to make things confusing, there is a mono version of that cable which is not wired properly to pass a balanced signal. (It's called the Hosa XVM102F - note the M in the product number for MONO.)

Thanks, that nails the problem.

Labeled "Pin 2 Hot", so I assume it must be balanced mono.

James, I think this is a bad assumption, and I think it's the source of your problems.
A balanced cable would not be labeled "Pin 2 Hot" because a balanced cable (by definition) has voltage on two pins, not just pin 2.

This is a wiring diagram for Hosa's XVM mono cable:

XVM_wiring.jpg

Pin 2 is hot, 1 and 3 are ground, and this cable is not gonna work on an Epic.

Now, here's a wiring diagram for Hosa's XVS stereo cable:

Pins 1, 2 and 3 are are passed straight through. This cable will work on an Epic.

Thanks, that nails the problem.

Glad to help.

Red woud do itself and its customers a lot of good by selling some proper cables in their store. This stuff is very confusing, and it really doesn't help that they've chosen a consumer input form factor that is used in about nine different configurations by everybody from Barbie's own microphone to DSLRs to Apple iPhone headsets.

Thanks for your patient information. Bad assumption indeed. I'm not used to mini jacks. In my experience, "Pin 2 hot" described only the xlr. Lots of audio equipment was wired pin 1 hot, and that needed to be differentiated. In this case it means pin 2 to tip/ring, tip 3 shorted to pin 1 !!!!!!!

Mini jacks are SO not-pro.

This is a good thread, thanks for the info. I just mistakenly purchased the XVM-102F and was wandering why it wasn't working. This clears it up.

We saw enough comments on this issue that we knew we'd best serve our customers by offering a RED cable option.

You now have the option to save a few bucks but with the risk of ordering / building the wrong type of adaptor cable, or you can buy a professional grade cable from RED.
