Does the RED PRO ZOOM 17-50mm vignette or not in full frame 5K? There have been numerous posts about this, but the answers seem to differ. I recently tried one of these zooms out at reduser Janne Janssons place in Uppsala. His vignette problems clearly was due to the old telescopic front. In a post from November last year reduser Andre Huse posted some worrying pics of the zoom vignetting at 17mm, 20mm, 25mm, 30mm, 35mm and 50mm. But it wasn't stated if the zoom in question was the old version with the long front or if it was the new version with the much shorter front:

The RPZ 17-50mm is really popular at all the big rental houses in Stockholm. It is the lightes PL-zoom in this range and is used with multiple different camera brands. I am thinking buying one and as I remember RED has stated that it does not display any vignette at full 5K.

What is the current situation? Please chime in.

PS: As I understand RED it has an upgrade program for the old RPZ, which means that the old front is replace by the new one.

V1 yes, do to the HOOD design, which can't be removed.

V2... NO... There is an upgrade path to have your V1 upgraded to the V2... ;)

Hey Carl, both the v1 and v2 of the RED PRO Zoom exhibit vignetting at FF5K. To me, it is not the most pleasing vignette because even when zooming through the lens, the vignette remains and it's characteristic changes slightly. With that much being said, you can still get some pretty images out of this lens.

There is no vignetting when aspect ratio is 5K Wide and below.

why is everydody thinking dragon will be 5k+?
dont know as long as lowlight perfomance is even better and we get 2 more stops in the highlights everything is nice to me.

btw. for my personal stuff, i use the rpz over cooke s4. best run and gun lens ever. but dont know how it works in a cinestyle enviroment because i never attached a follow focus to the rpz

Thanks Hutson, however your statement is opposite of Ketchs. This issue continues to be a litte bit paradox and crazy... :)

No disrespect but if what I'm saying is untrue, Jarred's findings are untrue just the same...

Optically it [RPZ 17-50 v2] is the same albeit the vignetting is slightly reduced at the full 5K sensor... There is no vignetting on 5K wide and below.

ok so thats internal focus right? I'm good as long as the lens doesnt get longer and shorter during focus

It's not 'internal' focus, the lens has a cover!
Vantage has some Leica macro lenses that they claim to be internal focus, however they are just still lenses that move forward in a barrel.

Correct Joseph, as you know I love to shoot 2:1, so yeah I should have read a bit slower what He posted, I just sow 5K, but I do shoot 5K 2:1, now 5K Wide, so there is absolutely no vignetting there.

Not even tested on 5K, which right now as it stand is the new 5KFF... So I must apologies Carl for misleading you on this one, my Bad for not carefully paying attention on what you were asking, and this time Joseph is correct in correcting me... ;)

The hard vignette is apparent only on 5kFF at 17mm to about 18.5mm

I'm not denying that. What I said earlier that after zooming in, you have a diffused looking vignette on 5KFF.

When the v2 is shipped from RED upon its upgrade over the weekend, I'll be happy to post a demo Motion/Stills of exactly what I mean...unless someone wants to beat me to it.
