  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4 x 128 gb SSD PACK.... please?

I think there's a pretty clear reason why there's no 4x 128 pack. Everyone wants the 128GB cards! Not to big, not too small, they're just right. I think the packs for the other cards are to try and balance out the demand.

From a customer POV, the 4x 128GB SSD would've been a no-brainer: Exactly what the doctor ordered.

And that's exactly why RED will not offer them :)

That's sad :-(
For documentary or live events work the 64gb are really too small.
And if the budget is a little tight, redmag 128 are not well priced compared to other offers...

This brings me to consider buying one redmag 256 instead of a 4x64 pack. Better price, more "future-proof"... but pretty risky if i got any problem with it at some point...

Anyone wants to share costs on a 4x256gb pack ? At less than 2500$ per unit, that's obviously an interesting idea.
I'd actually like to go 1x256 + 1x64 as a backup at this point, then invest in other big ssd later.

when has RED chosen profits over customer satisfaction? They could probably sell the EPIC for 80K like the F65 but they don't... I'm assuming it's so in demand they don't want to get backlogged even more by offering a discount.... Hopefully one day they will

4-pack of 128s will severely hurt 256 and 64 4-packs sales because of the multiple factors listed above.

Honestly, I don't think it'll appear in the RED store ever.

Go 256! I'm so glad I did because yesterday was the first time I actually filled the media and it only took 36m to do so. Although I will need to pick up another ssd while transferring and 64 might be ok.

I'll go SSD 256gb...

When dragon and other bigger sensor will come up, 128gb will be the new 64gb...
And in a blink of an eye, i'm pretty sure 256gb will be the entry point for recording...

Epic 5K, lowest compression?

Yannick nailed it! Or imagine the next update with RC 1:1:scared:That's like 8m on a 256!

Sorry I'm a quality whore :)

Yes - probably. Though I do wonder if this generations SSD's will be fast enough for whatever Dragon is.

RED needs profit. Nothing wrong with that. A lot of that comes from everything BUT the cameras themselves. Th DSMC handle alone will cost more thn a decent DSLR with the same functionality bult in +++

An adaptercable from old to new power lemo costs 190$

No complaints. Just observations...

Somethings have to pay for our bomsquads, R&D etc etc etc and it most likely isn't a 9000$ Scarlet camerahead.

Still feels like we're paying WAY over the odds for RED's SSD media....I think this is a marketing and pr mistake on RED's part. Much of the criticism of Scarlet for examples comes not from the cost of the camera BUT from the realistic actual cost of assembling a production ready rig. I know a lot of guys here who are getting ready to jump onboard with Canon's C300 as it come virtually ready to rock and the media costs are negligible.

If you take typical SSD prices of circa $400 retail for 256 GB media then compare this with RED's $3200 then this is a scary markup and reflects negatively IMHO.

While the performance of RED SSDs are hardly typical and then thus the part price, this is the most frequent argument I hear from the vs C300 indies...

The media is off-the-shelf.

I like Sony's approach of diferent certified media. Some certified for 4k+ uncompressed RAW (most expensive) others for 1080 compressed (least expensive)

Such an approach would have come in handy for the scarlet crowd, as their camara is already bandwith limited and really is not in need of Epic-type bandwiths...

Might actually work good for me 2 as 5k 48fps 5:1 hdr is not my daily shooting condition.

But RED has chosen a one size-fits-all aproach on media, which is kind of understandable, as you know it will allways work.

I think sticker shock is pretty common when buying the SSDs, but if you look at other camera system media e.g. Sony SXS and Panasonic P2, you are still paying nearly $1,000 for a 32GB card. Figure you buy 2 or 3 and you are getting into Red territory for cost. Even scarier is if you think back a few years when P2 first came out, people where paying around $1000 for an 8GB card that only got you 8 mins. I would say that the cost of equipping a Red properly is high, but relatively appropriate when looking at the big picture.

It's also true that in the store, 128's are only available to purchase in limited quantities. They are having a hard time keeping up with demand. If they release a 4-pack, 128's will go on perpetual backorder.

We're at the stage now where "off the shelf" media is more than capable of handling the data rate requirements of the latest and greatest cameras out there. My point simply is that we all know that manufacturers and this includes RED are making massive profits by forcing customers down a "proprietary" media route.

Feels wrong to me that companies are charging 500%+ markups on media and I'd rather RED charged more for the camera and less for media.
