I am renting my epic to an avid based production house with no red experience
(I am an adobe guy)
They are renting to catch a live painting by an artist, and want the ability to zoom in and follow his hand with no loss of resolution at HD, hence then need for my epic

I am trying to advise them on workflow, and I am hoping this can be contained within MC 5.5.....
Does MC work with the native R3D files, or does avid create proxies on the fly.....in PPro I can just resize my r3d to 1080p and then scale it up as need be.....but I am not too sure how Avid deals with this

If you had to do it (2+ hours of 4k, with some motion tracking) how would you recommend to go about it.....best workflow

Appreciate the help....if I can take away these guys fear of Red workflow I can get alot more rentals from them.

Won't work in MC, as it scales the Red footage to HD at the front of the pipeline. Not a Red problem, it's how MC works.

i would first start with a 'offline' in HD, 1/4 debayer is ok or if you have more time, or need to check focus, use 1/2 debayer.
Then edit this in Finalcutpro 7, where you can do the scaling and repositioning,
after the edit export a XML and then use Davinci Resolve 8b3 to import the xml, relinking with the original RAW files,
the scaling will be used from FCP7 , then do the colorgrading and after setting in Resolve a full debayer, do the render-export.
so you will get full resolution.
FinalcutproX does also work, but when using keyframes in the motion, these are not fully read in Resolve. Finalcutpro 7 is fine.
I you would still some editing, especially a lot of motion stabilisation in Resolve, it is more efficient to first use the Prores files for this, and after the stabilisation , relink with the RAW files. Use in Resolve- tab format the input transform !
i did some test with Epic footage and you can zoom up to 300% and still get a very good resolution image.
i dont have experience if a Avid aaf round trip would work.

Sorry Filip, but that workflow is a little cumbersome.
If I wanted to leave avid I can export AAF to PPro and work with the native r3d files there no need for final cut or davinci...

The main point was thus is an avid only production house.....no final cut no davinci.....just avid AE and redcine I guess....

Personally I use PPro, AE, and Fusion, so this isn't a issue for my work.....just trying to find a simple workflow for one of my avid only rental customers

They would have to take those elements to After Effects, work on the original R3D files and render out QuickTime/DNxHD from there.

Do they have a Avid DS?

if so it's a piece of cake, works much like your PP.. link to the r3d's, add a dve to the clip, scale your viewer back to show the 5K frame, turn on the tvsafe overlay to know where the edges of the output raster are, then pan-n-scan, track, stablise away

Need a fast machine to get playback at full premium tho.. a very fast machine.. mine can't do it
