  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has anyone heard of any news about a possible GPS feature on EPIC? I remember hearing something about it a few months back. Not too sure tho... If anyone has any news about this or about any new 3rd party accessories, to where I can track my camera from a computer or cell phone, it would be great to hear! Thanks!
 
How bout a thin light weight ( like a 1/4") thick, GPS module made by RED or 3rd party. It would be permanently (key locked) on the back of the brain or on the back of all the modules if you really wanted. Tracking for when you rent it out. Any thoughts? Love to hear...
 
I think it should be something that would not be easy to remove. Would love to have this in case of possible teft, but if its easily detachable and found it won't work for this particular purpose...
 
Yes. It would have to be locked on there with a physical key. Maybe a key hole on the bottom of the module that actually locks it onto the other modules like on to the brain. If someone stole it they would have to cut it off some how to remove it...don't think anyone would wanna do that...and by that time you would be tracking it. Anyone with time and money to develope this? RED or 3rd party? :) I would love it!
 
Thought about this, wouldn't anyone stealing a RED though know about the GPS if we all do too? i.e. people who rent the camera and steal it etc. since they know the camera they are renting

I guess its different from your everyday criminal but how would you prevent someone from ever knowing about the GPS, its the only way it'd work best right? Otherwise someone could probably also figure out a way to kill it if they wanted and still have a usable camera if they were really determined to steal REDs...

But a GPS would be awesome, was thinking of getting a small GPS tracker and sticking it at the bottom of the pelican case foam or something... if someones going to steal a camera, steal the case also at least...

Yeah I was thinking about that... putting one in my case... im gonna brainstorm a little more.
 
Lol i was just thinking that. That would work if you were on site working with the camera but if you rent it out through a rental house idk... maybe if RED can fit a GPS inside a workable RED VOLT and you can either buy a GPS one or a regular one, where they look exactly the same?
 
I normally go with my Epic everywhere and pretty much dont let it out my sight. The easy part is making it (ex-model maker here) one can be made to look exactly the same. (BUT wouldn't want to infringe Reds trademarks with the design etc so best not to even attempt to make one)

I found a gps unit, would need some taking apart and working - but it is quite good, you can geofence the camera within a certain area and it works via sim card and will text you when it goes outside that zone - you can also get it to send you texts every few hours with its position.

Yes I saw a GPS unit yesterday that texts you the position. Kinda cool, good luck with it! I just wish there was a hidden built in GPS inside the brain...
