Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)
If it's a good one, can be nice. I've seen one that looked soft and not so good but after coming back from Duclos with a new PL mount look better. Is it for Epic or Scarlet? Doesn't cover 5K very well.
Ah, cool. If I had a PL mount for my GH2, I would throw the Angie on there and try it out. Might be a cool look for that camera. And it will cover no problem.
For the same amount of cash once you add the PL mount and lens support bracket to this lens, I would look at a Cooke 20-100 which has a much closer close focus, much less breathing, and that classic Cooke look.
These lenses are so old that the quality varies a great deal from copy to copy. Which means that the prices from copy to copy are also quite variable. The price of this one seems a bit high to me, but not if it's a very good copy. I paid $800 for one of these, back in the PL lens shortage days of 2008, and had to have it overhauled by Duclos - the cost was $1300, so my total outlay for the lens was $2100, which isn't too bad. By the time it developed the issues which required it to be sent in for servicing, I wasn't really shooting with it anymore, anyway, so I was reluctant to spend the money. But now I'm glad I did. I kinda dream about shooting an micro-low budget film entirely on this lens. I'll still have to shoot a lot of tests with it, to find its limits, especially to see how it handles skin tones and to better evaluate the quality at the wide end, for specific situations.
Duclos did an excellent job of saving the patient. It was like getting a brand new lens back.
But I popped it on my EPIC and it did seem to cover 5K, to my surprise, without vignetting. I'd want to double-check this, at the wide end, to be sure...my actual footage is all shot at the zoom end.
It has a very specific look - very nice, if you are looking for a soft look specifically. A little dreamy and antique-y. Here's the one bit of test footy which I've shot with it, which is online. This was a macro test. I was curious about the quality of the bokeh and about how it would hold sharpness against the background. The results were better than expected. Even squashed to 1080p in a vimeo window, you can see the lens picking up individual granules of pollen: http://vimeo.com/29348970
I agree with what David is saying, though - this is kind of a "fun" lens for me. If you are looking for a single lens, and this is what you can afford, you could definitely shoot a film with it. But you will likely be happier spending a little more for the Cooke.
I have one, used for many years and now it's on the shelf. Rental wise ... it's not used anymore. But if you plan to use it yourself and thats yours budget, I can't think on a better investment. Are you interested in buying mine? It has PL mount and focus gears. I do have a GH2 that I can test that lens for you ...
