Hey folks,

Just wanted to see if anyone had some helpful tips for protecting cameras/lenses in the desert?

And any suggestions for which 95mm step down ring (clip-on) to use for the red pro matte box?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

The desert is a tough environment to shoot in, have shot in the Nevada and California Deserts many times, and now in the Emirates deserts as well, both in Rak and outside of Dubai, as well as in an other desert of the Emirates.

The camera and the lenses and basically all gear take a real bitting, if is not too hot a Rain cover is the best solution form Sand Dust particles, if it is Hot, just need to clean camera and lenses constantly.

Ketch, thanks so much for the info, and uhm... I AM NOT WORTHY!!
Love what you do with the Epic. Appreciate you sharing the wealth.

The sand here is particularly fine and gets EVERYWHERE. So as Ketch suggests, constant cleaning is essential.

Quite often youll find its in the moving parts of the lens rather than the front element that get the hardest beating. That sound is one of the most cringeworthy Ive ever heard. :(

As far as rain covers, worth a crack, but more often than not we go without. If its in a sandstorm, (which is rarer here than Mi4 would have you believe!) then plastic sheeting and a healthy amount of gaffer are perfect.

Camrade also make desert suits, we had one for the MX. Like rain suits but lighter, and white to reflect the sun.

he he, thanks Emmet, but never underestimate yourself, you'll be surprise what one can do... ;)

Andrew, I'l be seriously interested to see if your buddy also does Desert Suits for the Epic.

Yeah I agree fully about how thin the desert sand particles are over there in the Emirates, but it is one of the reasons I really Love it,
I have some latest footage that I can't share yet that will show why, especially when a galloping horse lifts it up with his stepping,
is lovely under the beautiful masked sun light of the sunset desert... ;)

Ketch the company that sells the suits is called camrade. We bought through alphatron. Not sure if they market a desert suit for the EPIC yet, but sure theyll have something in the works!

Andrew, thanks for jumping on board. Particles getting in the focus wheel and the like was definitely a concern, and obviously something I'd like to avoid. Will have sheeting and/or rain cover to be prepared for either scenario, in case the forecast goes hay-wire. Cheers for that.

Absolutely, what better place for subtle texture than the desert.

Sounds rich. Would love to see the footage when it is ready for the RED community to view.
