It would be cool to have a built in, permanent metadata tag to every camera (still and motion) so they can be tracked real easy by the content they create and post:

Wasnt there supposed to be GPS built in to the EPICS? But the Meta tag sounds like an easy software fix that would be great to hunt down hardware!

There is a "Camera PIN" in the metadata in REDCINE - a cursory check seems to have a different PIN for footage from different cameras, and the same PIN for footage from the same camera. I think this may be what you're looking for.

Can it be changed by a crook? If so then doesn't work for tracing. Needs to be an encrypted hidden file that is not rewritable by the user but can be read by a service like Camera Trace.

Does the PIN travel securely with the footage shot to allow the Trace?

Yes, it's embedded in every single R3D frame the camera shoots. The only way to get rid of it is to convert the footage to a non-R3D format. So insist on working with the RAW data! (which you should anyway since it's what makes Red so powerful)

Cheers from Tokyo,

Paul :)

So transcoding into ProRes would blow out the traceable digital fingerprint. Too bad

I think this is an excellent idea. I would love to have the security of that, even if my camera gets stolen, those using it couldn't posit from the camera. Some sort of remote shut down from red along with the GPS tracking would be great.

No need for GPS. Just sue the person (and their distributors) for all revenue as a result of selling work produced on your equipment. That would make Getty, and film distributors do a basic metadata background check on all footage they sell. Like a model release for content.

It all starts with a permanent, traceable metadata fingerprint - which I suppose is a industry wide standard the major manf need to agree on . . . when they're not suing each other
