  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Seeing as how the EPIC/SCARLET/ONE all can decode the footage they have shot, I wonder would it be possible with a new Module to connect it to a computer with Thunderbolt say, and use the Camera itself as a RED Rocket for playback/processing/rendering of footage on the connected computer?

Thoughts anyone...?

I guess that's a valid question. Is the playback from Epic/Scarlet the same Bayered image that gets spit out to SDI as when capturing? Probably yes. So in theory you could use a decklink card to digitize to 1080 in a pinch.

That's not what he's saying.

That the Rocket is essentially the guts of a camera on a board that the computer uses to read r3d data. So instead of using a Rocket to get realtime in Redcine, etc...Connect your Epic to the computer via fast connection and tap into the power inside the camera to work in Redcine as you would with a Rocket.

While, the hardware is there, I doubt this would be possible. I couldn't even use my HVX to monitor HD over firewire out to component.

Thanks Jarek.

It seems like it should probably be "possible" but maybe not worth the trouble :)

I don't think it is possible with the current cameras.
The camera is optimized to convert the signal from the sensor into r3d code, and although there is enough bandwidth to decode the r3d data to a an HD signal for monitors (HD-SDI, hdmi) the specific architecture, data pipelines and connectors in the camera won't support 4k/5k output.

There is also no high bandwidth data output (e.g. pci-e channel) and there has never been a mention of an hdmi 1.4 chipset in any of the current cameras.

In short the camera is efficiently converts from bayer to r3d and and theoretically r3d to bayer.

The Rocket converts r3d to intermediate/editable data formats via the GPU RAM or to an output signal compatible for display devices via the four onboard discrete display channels to which the four HD-SDI/HDMI connectors are connected.

REDrocket with REDcine X is far to flexable and makes you so much better at your craft along with speed an delivery that no you cannot supplement a camera body in place of a REDrocket.
