Great moment to change your old head to new :)

BTW - Also WTB 19mm Mattebox , that will fit 18-85 and Red Primes . It can be any cheap matte box .

I got Alan Gordon's used Sachtler Studio II head with two Ronford Baker legs (tall and baby) with cases and they are really nice and no problem to hold a camera setup from 20 to 110 pounds. If you ask them for two sets, you may able to fit into your $10,000 total budget.

Miller 25 Compass Head with Gitzo 3 Stage Carbon Fiber Sticks ftw!!
Compass25 seems a little light weight for a RED One with a 18-85 on it. Have you used this combination?

I'd call the guys at visual products, http://www.visualproducts.com. They can hook you up with a pair of refurbed O'Connor 50s, Pan Handle Upgrades, and sticks for under $5K. You may also need a Mitchell adapter and high hat / low hat depending on just what mount you get from them, but you'd still come in way under budget.

I like my RedRock Mattebox, but the rear opening is right at 5.5". I'm not sure if it would work with the 18~85 for that reason. Of course if you save $5K on your tripod purchase you can spend it on a more pro-grade mattebox.

Actually if the Red 18-85/Red One setup wasn't also loaded up with tons of other heavyweight accessories, the Miller Compass 25 head would handle the setup just fine. The Red 18-85 weighs 10 pounds, Red One weighs 9 pounds, and with maybe 10 more pounds of accessories (MB, etc.) the total rig weight would be around 29 pounds. The Miller Compass 25 is rated for a maximum of 31 pounds - and IMO will easily handle a few pounds more than that.

Since this past February Ketch Rossi has been using a Miller Compass 25 with our jointly-owned Epic M 0008 and his other Epic - with great results. I've attached a recent photo Ketch supplied to me of an Epic/Red 300/Miller Compass 25 setup in use in Dubai. The Red 300 weighs 6 pounds, Epic weighs 5 pounds, the Bomb EVF 2 pounds, top handle combo about 2 pounds, the side handle 1.5 pounds.

I've also been using the Miller Compass 25 with Epic and Sony F3 cameras in the field for months now - with great results. I use my Compass 25 head with Miller Solo 1505 spreader-less CF legs. I recently became sponsored by Miller, but for several years before that I was using Miller Arrow 55 and more recently Miller Compass 25 heads with my Red cameras. Miller heads are well built, perform quite well, and IMO they are among the best performance to price ratio heads available.

I also want to get a fluid head under 4.5k, the Miller Compass 25 is one of the contenders, but have you guys tried the Sachtler DV-12SB or the Cartoni D600 Delta Rosso? Please, help. Thanks!

Thanks very much for your input, Steve! As always, you come armed with facts and real-world personal experiences that are invaluable to the rest of us. Per your recommendation, I'll be adding the Compass 25 to the list of heads that I'm considering for our upcoming RED One purchase.

And sorry, Vigen...I am not trying to take over your thread...but you are getting some great suggestions and input!

I am pretty set on the Satchler DV10SB or DV12SB (depending on final funds) for my incoming Scarlet, though I still find myself looking at these threads, just in case!

Same here Jeffrey, miller compass 25 is growing on me, I want to go to B&H and check them out.

Agree with you , but i need to add on my Epic - Mattebox , FF4 , Cmotion , RedBrick to power Cmotion, and small HD monitor .

Just to confirm what Steve is saying...

A friend of mine here has a Miller Arrow 55, I have a Cartoni Delta and another friend has an Oconnor 1030. All three are great fluid heads. All three can carry quite a bit of weight (and have been used quite a bit on RED One shoots). The Miller and Delta carry noticeably more than the 1030. An Epic with pretty much anything except a 12x Optimo will work on these medium sized fluid heads -- the Epic weighs less than the RED One, SSD media for an Epic weighs much less than the RED drives + iso drive mounts and/or cradles on RED Ones, the single brick on a battery plate for an Epic is much less than the bracket plus hot swap plate plus at least one brick (and often times two bricks) that we put on RED Ones. Not to mention that most set ups I've seen for Epics result in a lower center of gravity than comparably set up RED Ones -- which ups the relative capability of the fluid heads.

By the way, I'm talking about setups with studio swing-out matteboxes w/ NDs, follow focuses, EVFs + 2nd monitor for focus puller, audio packs, etc. (ie. a film production environment).

Hope this helps people that are trying to make decisions, yet don't have access to the range of fluid heads that are there.

Paul, many thanks for all that information. Cheers.

Miller Arrow 55 has maximum 55 pounds payload while Miller Compass 25 has 30 pounds playload. I think Miller 55 will be fine with your Red One kit but Miller 25 won't be in the safe zone with your red one kit. Personally I own two tripod systems (Sachtler Studio II 150mm and Cartoni Laser 100mm) and one of them will cover whatever situations I face. If you need to get one system to cover most situations, I think Miller Arrow 55 or 50, Cartoni Delta, and Oconnor 1030 will be your best choice.
Miller Compass 25 will be fine for most Epic/Scarle set-ups except some heavy zoom uses.

Did many a shoot with Sachtler 12sb, Red One, and 18-85 zoom and primes.
Epic should work just fine.

Thanks for the kind words...

The Miller 55 has been my tripod of choice for Red One since August 2007 - and the head performance has been excellent. On multiple Red User threads since then I've posted descriptions and photos of my Red One/Miller 55 camera setups - including head load setups between 25 and 55 pounds (Optimo 12x). For light to medium load Red One setups, and basically any Epic setup I shoot with I've been using the Miller Compass 25 - and the head performance has been excellent. The Miller Compass 25 head supports 31 pounds (30.9 pounds to be exact). My camera setups are streamlined for mobility, so even with Epic and large 35mm still lenses (Canon) my heaviest head load is around 30 pounds.

The work I do involves a high degree of mobility - thus I use heads that don't weigh a lot, but will support good head loads with smooth head action - and these Miller heads have supplied that quite nicely at reasonable prices.

At times throughout my career I've used basically all major brands of professional tripod heads - O'Connor, Sachtler, Miller, Vinten, Cartoni, etc. All perform well - but some are quite expensive. In my experience Miller has the best performance to price ratio available. That's not a criticism of other heads. Some niche's of this industry traditionally use certain brands of tripod heads, and that's what's expected on the set. But if you do indie films, mobile TV work, business productions, etc, you'd be wise to seriously check out a Miller Arrow 55 for Red One, or a Miller Compass 25 for medium to light head load work with Epic and Scarlet.

Vigan,
On your budget ($4,000), if you're using super-heavy cine style head loads with Red One, and you're doing indie work, you should consider looking around for a used Miller 55 head. I think you'd be quite happy with it.
