I'm wondering....I'm going to be shooting my first short in a month on the Scarlet. I am wanting to see if I can host a viewing party at a nearby 4k theater. I'm wondering, not having worked with 4k or a RED camera before....If the theater were to allow me to screen my film there....what format would I need to finish out to so that I can bring them the film to play. Anyone know? Would it be a hard drive or....

The first question is how are you going to edit in 4K?

Theaters are set-up to play 2K or 4K materials from a DCP, so once your film is complete you will need to have a DCP created. Otherwise most can also play 1080 via Bluray

Well....I could use some tips for a good workflow. I have a quad core i7 Macbook pro with 8gb ram. I'm not sure if that can handle 4k. The short will be about 20 minutes. I would like to keep the final product in 4k for the theater showing if at all possible. Is the DCP something I can export from Final Cut or Premiere pro or will I have to send off the the project files to someone to have it done.

What would be a good workflow for a RED newbie.

editing 4K is not for the weak of heart :) I would think if you are asking these questions editing at 2K would be a better goal.

DCP is best left to professionals

Just did a google search Greg, I'll def just send off the final and have someone make the DCP for me.

I have both premiere pro and final cut. Would you use Redcinex to encode file into Prores for FCP or would you just edit the R3d natively in PP? Your preference.

Either is a good solution, which are you most comfortable with FC or Premiere? I would use the software you are more experienced with as they both are excellent solutions. Personally I prefer using RC to render offline footage, this is the more traditional route...but both work well.

If you can't find someone locally to make the DCP, give us a call...we can make you a deal since its a short.

I've used both equally.

I'm familiar with online/offline editing but haven't ever utilized it myself. I'll look into that more.

Also thanks for the offer. Could you shoot me a message and give me a general ball park estimate as to creating a DCP for a 20 minute short? Doesn't have to be scientific...just something else I need to put in the budget and I have no idea what would be relatively close. I won't hold you to anything just want an idea. Thanks
