I was on United.com and there carry-on bag rules say

" you may carry on one bag and one personal item such as a large shoulder bag, large backpack, briefcase, laptop bag or an item of similar size. Your carry-on bag...
  • must fit under your seat or in the overhead bin;
  • must not be more than 9 x 14 x 22 inches (23 x 35 x 56 cm) or 45 linear inches* (114 linear cm); and
  • may be required to travel as checked baggage if the bag cannot be safely stowed on your flight."

The following items are not counted toward your one bag and one personal item limit:
  • Overcoat or wrap
  • Umbrella
  • A reasonable amount of reading material
  • Pet carrier (fees apply)
  • A collapsible wheelchair
  • Child restraint seat meeting FAA approval standards
  • Camera
  • Diaper bag
  • A limited amount of duty-free merchandise or food purchased at the airport
  • Assistive devices (a cane, one set of crutches, prescription medications and any medical devices needed to administer the medications, a portable oxygen concentrator (POC), etc.)

So do you thank i cloud get away with 2 1510 pelican cases as my carry-on bags + ONE :ihih:CAMERA:ihih: in a RED EPIC 1510 case??????

Please post you thoughts thanks

I used to work as crew on Delta, and I can tell you almost for sure, you have no chance of getting on a flight with TWO cases, and there will be cases where the plane will be so full that they will ask EVERYONE to check their bags. And when they take your bag at the gate, they will toss it down a long slide where it bangs on the bottom, and then throw it on a cart and then you would not believe how hard they will sling it inside the plane to the front of the plane and build a wall of bags, with yours potentially at the bottom, or worse at the top where it might fall on takeoff. So, as for myself, I would never check something that can't be beat up by a large gorilla and would even consider taking a later flight to have more bin space.

However, many airlines will allow you to pay extra to get a EXIT ROW, which usually means you will be able to board first and therefore there will be more bin room (that is, if your client will not pay for First Class)

IF NOT, usually 30 min before boarding, the gate agents will release exit rows that are not paid for, and if you know how to schmooze, then you can politely ask for an exit row. There is an art to getting an exit without paying, and easy to come across as an ass; so its in your hands how well your gear is treated in transit.

Hope this helps.

I need to fly with 3 1510 cases for all me gear so am i out of luck or do you thank i can get away with it???

I got away with getting my 1510 onboard some very small aircraft where you weren't even allowed a carry on by citing the new battery rules that say that the larger batteries must be carried on and not checked. On one of the flights they put the case in the cock pit because there wasn't room anywhere else.

Not a chance as carryon. I fly with a single Storm IM2500 carryon that contains my full Epic ready to shoot, and check a larger Pelican with non fragile stuff in it as well as sticks etc.

not a chance. take your camera lenses and batteries on with you in 1 hard case and 1 overhead-sized backpack. I fly a lot with my camera and this is what I do. Check the rest in a hard suitcase so it doesn't look like film equipment. I've recently purchased a miller compass 25 with miller vj solo carbon fiber sticks and I can fit both in a large suitcase along with my mattebox, charger, clothes etc.
Here are some photos of how I pack (without the clothes that I use to cushion everything.)

Current as of today United Media Baggage Rates, you gotta call them.

Current as of today United Media Baggage Rates, you gotta call them.

Latest on United's Media baggage rates. This is NOT on their website, I specifically called them to ask them what they were, I was on hold for at least 15 min or so and then the guy came on and told me this.

I asked for it in writing and printed it out and I'm taking it with me. Worldwide travel. And this was as of today when it was sent to me. If you travel with them print this out or pm me and I'll forward you their email if it will help. If you don't provide them with credentials or business card, you will pay $150 for each additional bag over the second bag.

FYI.

I have always gotten media rates on United and American and I try not to fly anyone else. Flying out of O'Hare is the BEST. I show up at the curb, the skycap totally knows the drill, he goes inside with my ID and Credit Card, comes back with my baggage receipt and boarding pass. Absolutely a breeze every time. Coming back home is never as easy, sometimes they have to get a supervisor to find the media rate.

Once I was checking in at Dulles and told the obviously new agent that I was checking 11 bags. He was like, "uh... that's too many." I just smiled and said, "No such thing... I have a credit card"

Drag is a lot of airlines are using regional jets wherever they can. Most roll-aboards do not fit in the overhead or under your seat on the smaller jets. I always try to book my assistant and I in the same row and then the camera case can go horizontally in front of both of our feet.

Man, I hate flying.

That is very true. We recently did a gig in Italy and took our Scarlet, fully assembled, as a carry-on in a Lowepro Magnum 400AW camera bag. No problems whatsoever on the Boeing 777 from LA to Rome. Fit perfectly in the overhead. However, on the hop from Rome to Turin, it was a small Embraer regional jet. Hardly anything would fit the overhead ... certainly not the Lowepro bag. Luckily, the Alitalia crew were pretty cool and they stowed the camera bag in the crew closet. A smile and a few words in Italian went a long way!

Great post. I could have saved myself a bunch of $$$ on my recent trip to India with Epic. I flew United and I paid $100 each way for 2nd bag and had to send some stuff back becuase they wanted $200 for the 3rd bag.

Domestically Southwest and Frontier are great to fly with when it comes to media. I often fly with large equipment, and half the time never get charged with either airline. They are always super cool and accommodating. I haven't had good experiences with united, so I just avoid them as often as I can.

The simple solution to the overhead bins being full is to always carry your REDVolts and bricks like you're supposed to in the 1510. It's illegal to put it in the cargo hold so they'll have to find space along with your camera. But no you won't get 2 and a backpack. That's TSA and there is no airline that'll let you fly with 3 large backpacks.
