So I've never created a rig/mounting solution for cameras before. I've used a simple shoulder rig for a dslr but that's it - so you could say I have no idea what I'm doing. What I'm after for my Scarlet is:

Front rails for follow focus, matte box, and support for a 70 - 200mm Canon IS II
Some sort of bottom plate (from what I understand, these are needed to attach the rails to)
The Red sliding top handle, and a Red arm for 5" Touch, which would mount to the top/side of the arm?

Will this work? I'm a little out of my depth, so if anyone could chime in that would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks all.

Josef

Join the Party! Most Scarlet owners-to-be in the same boat. I would start with going thru some of the posts right on THIS forum to link up with vendors and see what they offer. ViewFactor and WoodenCamera and Innocinema being great places to start. Basically most every product made at RED is also out there in alternate versions, prices - and quality. Our collective job is figuring out which combo suits our needs and budget. Scarlet-users are realizing that Epic-spec'd gear (RED or otherwise) on a Scarlet budget is a challenge, to put it mildly! Since you seem to have figured out WHAT you want to use, now you need to do the ground work and see which combo suits your needs.

Everyone has an opinion. Generally, once you go a particular brand-route, the tie-in pieces "usually" need to come from the same source. Base/riser plates being a classic example. If you buy a WoodenCamera base plate, then their 15mm rail bracket will likely be the best (only??) one to use with it. Like-wise RED. Whereas both these company's top handles work generically... so which do you want??

As an aside - doesn't the RED Touch come WITH an arm? My Bomb did...
If not then arms are on of those things that are pretty well universal, so you have some price-point choices.

Anyway to your initial question: "Will this work?" sure - as far as it goes. You haven't mentioned how you want to hand-hold it... or power it... oop! more decisions!

The Touchscreen LCD does not come with an arm.

To add what Curran said, the 5" touchscreen LCD doesn't come with an israeli / noga arm like the RED One did. Instead, it has a permanent bracket that screws onto whatever you decide for it. If you're going to be using the Canon 70-200mm lens, you can do without the matte box, follow focus and rails to save money and bulk. Use the shade that comes with the lens, screw on filters and focus by hand. Not fancy, but much more affordable.

Like Stu said, many options on kit gear and they generally play well only with their own kind, but it's not a rule. Best advice? Take it slow. You'll buy more of this junk than you wind up using and then need to unload what you were convinced was the right setup. Everyone has some gear they thought was the ticket only to find out it had limitations or wasn't what they needed after all.

I am very red-centric when it comes to this rigging. My suggestion would be to get the outrigger handle if you wanna mount the touch on top. The sliding handle mounts on top of the rail which then would not allow you to mount the touch. You could get the tactical top plate and mount both. Sometimes I mount the touch on top, sometimes I don't. The Tactical top plate had 1/4 on the side so you could possibly mount the touch to the side, flip and turn it up, then pan it towards camera and still mount the tail and sliding top handle. Best to get the rig, maybe even visit a rental house, ask for a demo and then know what you will need. Rental houses are good people to develop great, not good, but great relationships with. They have saved my ass a number of times, and it's incredible what a little chitchat and a case of beer will get you. Don't take advantage but be nice and they generally like helping you.

*** CORRECTING SELF ***

Red just released a bit that goes on the sliding handle so you could have the handle and touch on it.
