  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

On November 3rd, 2011, the world found out that Scarlet-X would be almost identical in size and form factor to Epic-X. This made it possible for the two camera systems to share most of their accessories, rail systems and lens mounts.

However, there are obviously many differences to discuss. Since many people have not yet had an opportunity to see either camera up close, I thought it would be valuable to have a thread specifically devoted to the two camera brains, and how they differ from one another.

With future firmware upgrades, this list could be a moving target.

Does anyone feel motivated enough to make a comparison chart with FPS and compression rates listed? I'm too wiped out.

One obvious physical difference is the presence of ribs on the Epic-X's right side.

Scarlet does not have them.

Another obvious difference is the top exhaust cover. (See above)

Are any of the materials significantly different?
Is there a significant weight difference?
Are they any subtle differences in the rear connections?
Are there, or will there be, some features (besides frame rate and Redcode limitations) that will only be available on the Epic-X?

Scarlet felt to weigh significantly less than my Epic M when held with no accessories on either one... I had a hard time believing it, but its true. I'm very excited about these cameras, what they are now, and what they will be able to do in the future as well. Red designed these with a lot of care and it almost brings a tear to my eye to see the level of care that they put into this.

This is a company that is not compromising to please shareholders, and they have built a platform that is upgradeable and "hot-roddable" if you will.

Really a good investment if you have clients.

This is pure speculation since nothing is activated yet, but back in the day Red mentioned things like an internal 3-axis motion sensor (like your smartphone) being built in to the Epic, for metadata logging of motion capture movement etc. Little extras like that are probably NOT in the Scarlet due to cost saving. Over time and as the firmware matures, we'll likely see more of these sorts of little differentiators crop up (if indeed they are in the body to begin with).

HTH

Cheers from Japan,

Paul :)

Yes, I was reading that post of Jim's this morning (from the Oct 30th thread).

He also said that Epic would have a built-in GPS.
Is that in there, but just not enabled yet?
Or has it been left out?

It would be nice to know which features are no longer available.

Yeah.

The external differences can probably be counted on one hand.

I'm curious about the differences in the menus ... differences in the features. The higher quality compression rates and high frame rates certainly justify the cost difference, but I have to believe that there will be at least a few features only found on the Epic-X.

Perhaps it will evolve over time and firmware builds.
