I came across this post of Brat Allen:

How many of you arereally gonna get ur investment back on these cams it is
definitely over killfor the web, and such a slow workflow and unreliable cams
and heavy as hell, they just eat more money than they make if ur just shooting
web stuff, who isever gonna really see ur 4k footage imax? really? who will you
deliver this 4kmaterial too I just don't understand 20k spent for what?

so u all can shoot the same stuff thats all over the web like flowers
boatswaves bugs allot of over used slow motion, sorry but out of all of you I
onlysee maybe one of you making it big in the industry the rest are never
reallygonna amount to anything, too much competition out there and scarlet will
notgive u the edge at all, battery life is horrible ssds are way too
expensive, storage is expensive, slow workflow and for what? to deliver a 1080p
image inthe end! I really hope none of you have to end up selling ur Scarlet
because ugot in over ur head and cant pay ur credit or bank loan unless ur
shooting afeature for the big screen u over payed, and trust me not everything
on redlooks flawless I have seen red footage look like crap at times in the
hands ofwrong ppl in the end all the money in the long run u are spending might
as wellbought an epic and get it over with...

4k is for ppl that need all the help in the world in post because you
cantshoot it right the first time so u have to grade the shit out out it to make
itlook passable. sorry to offend but now after seeing the light have to
sayunless ur gonna get ur investment back in a month or have a lot of money
toburn this camera is not for u ! the scarlet fixed would have been a
betterchoice but now u have a overpriced camera for what?

most of u spend more time on here than shooting, I have seen fs100 beat
redfootage on the web at times I have seen 5d footage look incredible for ppl
whoknow what they are doing but i'm gonna losse it if I see more red footage
ofboats flowers and garbage, where is the features or real work who is
reallypaying u all to shoot flowers and waves and please stop using so much
120fpseveryone does it it's getting lame now.

Fact most theater only project 2k as it is and with all the sofware bugs
epichas u think ur scarlet will really be reliable, I think u all should
havewaited to see how the scarlet works out there hear reviews and stuff but all
ofu are so eager to plop down 15k like its 5 bucks wow must be nice to burn
moneylike that, plus 4k tech will be available almost everywhere soon and
cheaperyou all think that no one can cum out with a better cam than red u must
besmoking crack there will always be someone better than u so I bid goodbye
tored and all of it's overpriced hype and buggy software RED is excellent
forfeature films but for internet overkill....

Hve fun getting in to debt and only being able to shoot 12--15min of footage
ata time on 64gb and 25-30 min on redvolt not worth all the trouble in the
enddon't bother tot respond to me I wont read it i'm out peace.....

He says what many people think. I'd love the idea of giving every scarlet user and red newcomer the chance to proof them wrong.
So why don’t we organize a short movie contest to show how passionated and talented the red newcomers really are?

Suggested rules:

- Shoot with a Scarlet
- Not more than 3 minutes long

Suggested topics:

„Stereotypes“
„Things that Money can't buy“
„Flowers, Boats, Slow Motion…“ :wink5:

…further rules and suggestions welcome!

Price: Any sponsors here? :smile5:

why would people here have to proof anything to this guy or to others? most of us are professional. working, living on it. like architects, painters, etc. nobody is asking them to proof anything to other architects, painters, they don't care, they just do. like most of us. who cares about this guy?
and he just says what many people having done nothing in this industry think.

there was an article interviewing John Walker CSC in Canadian Cinematographer, the best advice he built all of his success on was simply this; "don't worry about the money, focus on your craft. Do your craft as best as possible and the money will follow". It was an inspiring article and a rule you have to try and live by. I really don't know if I will make the money back this year, but thats business, a gamble if you will. No different than if I put the 25,000 into buying merchandise for sale, its a business gamble. Keep determined, keep sharp, and shoot shoot shoot.

I understand what your saying, but comments like that don't bother me, because some of it is true. I'm still trying to prove myself wrong that this was a good investment =]. Time will tell, and I can't wait for it.

Well I guess that's it guys! I guess the right thing to do now is go home!

:wink5:

I want to respond to that rant not because I want to argue back at Mr. Brat Allen, but I want others to know that he is wrong on many levels.

I started really getting into the film game 2 years ago when I was a freshman in college. To anyone that says you can never amount to anything, well... I severely disagree with that statement.

If you really are passionate about film and want nothing more than to succeed in life be it through film, then there is nothing holding you back other than yourself. If you believe the fool who tries to convince you that your worthless, than you are a fool yourself. Do not be that guy. You know what the best motivation in life should be for everyone? When someone tells you you can't accomplish something, prove them wrong... I have learned that it is extremely more satisfying to accomplish a goal against others belief rather than when I accomplish a goal when someone already believed I could do it. So if your someone who is even slightly letting this guy make you think you can't do it, stop, prove him wrong.

When I started college I had only $3000 to my name after selling my dirt bikes, with that money I went off and bought a Canon XH-A1 and less than 30 minutes after purchasing it, I was shooting on my first gig. I will admit, I did not know what I was doing now that I look back, but I pursued it heavily because I WANTED to and I loved it. And to this day I am still constantly doing work for that company. Fast forward two years and I am now able to purchase a Scarlet with my own money, not the banks. Why? Because this is what I am passionate about and I worked hard for what I am passionate about and enjoyed it every step of the way, who doesn't?

So I really just want to leave you with this, if you truly are passionate about film, then don't let anybody discourage you from making it for yourself. The biggest threat to your success in the end really is yourself. Prove this man wrong.

[P.S. The man is right, I do spend way too much time on this site... Not ashamed though, talking shop with all you guys is more entertaining to me than sitting on the couch and playing xbox:wink5:]

A Scarlet short film comp is great idea.

But please don't start it because of Bart.

Unless it's a comedy festival.

That could work.

I came across this post of Brat Allen

Was the typo intentional?

imho, forget the contest, life is already too competitive. Make it creative, collaborative. Like the one second film festival. Everyone supplies their individual heartbeat. Put it all together. Becomes this living thing. Fantastic way to put together a reduser reel and have fun doing it.

In the same spirit as this :

Can we say 5 minutes?

I am planning on doing a short, there is no way I can get it down to 3 minutes. (I want at least 3 songs in it.) If thats the case I am in! I just had an idea last night that would fit it really well, but I was planning to make it around ten minutes. I can work with in 5 though.

Theme: Bart Allen goes missing after a particularly evil rant...

Writers... GO!

I have three features for next year all being shot on my scarlet.. Most people are getting one to do real work. Some people can just get one because they are rich. Was the same with red one and will be the same always..

Or there are people like me who saved their ass off to afford it and have a passion.

I'm down with this idea...
Start a thread like the 'shot on RED' thread,

See whats the best short film you can piece together with the most minimum Scarlet package possible... however long you want it....

I guess there should be a prize but I'd prefer to think that Scarlet owners will be so creative they can prove that with a $14K package or there about you could film something if you have time thats fun and creative but also potentially captivating...

Not saying this is how ALL productions would be but would be interesting to see...

Now just so it doesn't get so crazy but its just the idea of being able to show what, if you had a lot of time and support, you could film with the basic package or slightly built on...

It gives people an idea that something like a 16K package is possible with the right ideas of making 'this' but obviously one must disclose that 'I had already got lenses and tripod prior to buying a scarlet' kind of thing...

Think that would be far more interesting to the general public and if you so wanted, proving Bart Allen wrong (not a necessity here though)

This is such a cool idea. I'm going to start work on my three minute piece with the theme "Things money can't buy". Like a 2/3's Fixed lens Scarlet. Zing!

How about a choose your own adventure collaborative short? many different takes on one concept written by whoever wants to, many different shots from different users with different takes on things, and put all the files up online so who ever wants to can cut it together however they see it. could even continue to add to it and change it, and we could call it the living short or something like that.... Just an idea!

Or pick a classic story short or something, or one good script we all agree on and then piece it together across the world, getting everyone to input footage only they can get geographically or whatever. Plenty of room for creativity here I like the idea and would love to contribute.

good idea!

Clearly that was posted literally by a kid. No adult would deliberately offend the reader by using "u" or "ur" or not use punctuation.

I honestly NEVER expect to make my money back from a Scarlet purchase and I don't really think it's the best camera for me or even the best camera for most people. The ONLY reason I want one is because there is so much hype around RED products that I'll get jobs from people who read RED in my cover letter and say oooooooooo!!! he has a RED! These are the same folks who spend $2500/day on the camera department and then offer the Production Mixer $150/day including enough gear to buy two RED Ones, so we know how bright they are. Unfortunately, the lunatics are running the asylum and if they want a camera that's largely hype, that's what they shall get.
