Hi

I searched the threads with no luck. What are the bolt sizes I need for the Epic and Scarlet for mounting items? Such as to the camera body, Tactical rails, etc. I am not good with this metric stuff, I see on the store they are 15mm, but when I look on the online shops for anodized bolts, they use stuff like M3, M5, etc.

Any clues? Want to get some cool Red bolts and stuff

Thanks
Ron

They are 1/4" 20 socket screws.

I don't know the metric equivalent, I'm not sure there is an exact equivalent in metric. Doing a google search for 1/4-20 socket screws should get you some results.

Not sure on that, if you look on the store, the old bolt set for the red one is 1/4 20, and the notes show they do not work on the Epic. The only bolts htey show for Epic are the 15mm Wing nuts. So that is why I am confused, as I have some Red 1/4 20 already that I use not the R1. Damn, wish it was next week and my Epic was here, then problem solved.

good to know, then the data on the red store is incorrect. They I am ready to style my nice shiny Red Aluminum bolts on my Epic as we'll.

Thanks
Ron

Ron, be careful with aluminum bolts. I remember reading a post by Jarred not too long ago that Red had problems with red aluminum bolts breaking in early protoytpe Red Ones (I think). May have been Epics. They're apparently really hard to remove when they break.

Maybe someone else here remembers and can locate that post.

now that would not be good,
I have been using the racing grade bolts on my R1 for 3 years with no problems so far, mainly for some of the mounting HW attachments and such. Figured the Epic is lighter, and so are the accessories. But good to know, would be helpful to know what grade bolt they were that failed.

No one in this thread is qualified to operate a bolt. Please seek professional help.

Most attachment bolts...
Are 1/4x20 thread.
3/8x16 are used for bottom plate mounting.
Most screws and bolts used to assemble the cameras, and some module attachments are M series metric.
Verify first!

Use stainless steel, especially for those of you who take your cameras out into the wild.
The last thing you want are rusted screws and bolts.

Never use aluminum screws or bolts! They are substantially weaker than steel.
Color means nothing when you are trying to extract a broken screw.

Never use a screw that is too short.
If you only have one or two threads to grip, you could easily strip out those threads in the weaker material, usually the fitting.
Never use a screw or bolt longer than specified. You could bottom out in the screw hole leaving a loose fitting attachment or worse, drive it through into sensitive parts of the camera.

Bolts from my R1 are the right thread size, but some are too long, for example to bolt the NATO rail directly to the top of the camera, without a top plate, so I ordered a bunch of of shorter bolts. Now that I've got a top plate, it's not a problem anymore.

The thread size is 1/4x20, there is no metric equivalent.

Cheers,
Damien

Hey guys... What about the bolts in the tactical rib cage? They are the same as the bolts for the top plate that aren't torx. We're trying to find some spares and it's not in the RED store.

Ask your bomb squad rep. They sold me all kinds of spare bolts.

The common thread sizes used on motion picture cameras are

UNC

1/4 20

3/8 16

There is no exact metric equivalent as the angle of thread is different.

There are others of course but this is what you need to get a small stock of. We prefer hex head bolts our selves in stainless. It's is difficult to strip the hex head and though a tool is required its no hardship at all. Every one around cameras should have a full set of imperial and metric allen keys anyway. If you buying them make sure you get a full set with the odd sizes which are not in the smaller sets. Pref with a ball end and if you can get a plated or stainless set as they will last a life time, ours are made by Bhondus. Stainless bolts in UNC can be found at Harley Davidson type shops and some custom car shops in most needed lengths the head styles. In the UK we use Wye Vale fasteners who are in expensive and have great product range. Im sure in the USA there will be much bigger choice of vendors, Nothing wrong with films stores etc but the price of fasteners in stainless seems to cost a premium if you mention film or TV.
