The capabilities of the Maximus will be highly restricted due to Thunderbolt only utilizing 4x lanes of PCI-e. Due to this limitation I believe you will not see a significant performance gain over other cheaper externally seated graphics cards. Better to use a RR card IMO. The good news is that Thunderbolt will gain bandwidth over time and eventually will scale up to 100 Mb/s. If and when we ever see new MacPro's they will perhaps have higher bandwidth optical thunderbolt ports but it will be sometime till we see this in laptops.

Maximus over Thunderbolt sounds like a daft idea. Do you have any sources for this info? Besides, easy 4K editing on a laptop has been a reality for a couple of years now.

Not without an external thunderbolt enclosure which to my knowledge are not shipping yet.

Several weeks from now, you will have options. But don't expect too much from them until the hardware on the computer side gets better.
