  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Epic Canon FD Mount?

It works with all FL, FD lenses old and new.
Parts on hand- starting assembly...
We'll start shipping next week- pending the approval of course..:wink5:

That is just awesome, I love my FD glass, beautiful skin tones, very dramatic contrast. It would've been a shame to see my set go to waste moving forward into the future.

Michael email me directly and you'll have all info needed. still few left in the first batch.

Hey, Jacek. I've emailed you a couple of times but haven't heard back. Is there something else I need to do to secure a place in the first batch? Thanks in advance.

I've just resent you the reply Paris.
Let me know, yes you are in the first batch.
Thank you for the support!!!!!!

Jacek, did I miss an announcement, has Jarred given the official thumbs up to the FD mount yet, or do I have to lean on him? Threaten a surprise fire inspection or something... :scared:

There has been some serious issues with some of the 3rd party mounts as of late being manufactured incorrectly and shorting out cameras. .. Jacek is working on fixing his and has promised to fix any of the ones already sent out that could be of issue. Obviously this is a pretty big issue as cameras need to be sent back to us to be repaired, so we have put a pause on approving any new mounts till then.

Uh oh.
Might have to cancel my ProLock Nikon mount then and stock up on PL glass until the Red Nikon mount ships. (unless Jarred mails me a prototype ;) )

Jarred, is this impacting only Optitek or are other 3rd party mounts causing issues? (Allstar etc.)

Thanks for the update Jarred... bad news is better than no news, looks like 'fire inspection' wasn't so wide of the mark after all...

Just to relieve the "cliffhanger " here:
We are still investigating the incident. In the mean time we are following the Red engineering recommendations to make sure that there is absolutely no possibility of this repeating.
Please contact me at the email below and we will address your concerns thoroughly.
Thanks again Jarred and RDC engineering for taking time to help us. With the manufacturing burden it makes this that much more valuable...

It's a shame... I have a *gorgeous* piece of FD glass - an 85mm F1.2 L - and every time I walk past it, it whispers 'find some way to mount me!'

I'm sure there was a good reason for the way it was done - probably lack of space - but it's a shame RED couldn't have engineered things such that the body contacts were recessed, even a millimeter or so - then every non-smart mount could be a simple flat plate with no fear of shorting. As it is, a slot has to be machined just right... good luck Jacek, keep us informed, hope it gets resolved soon.

it whispers 'find some way to mount me!' ------------ so many jokes, so little time.

Did Jarred confirm which 3d party mounts were causing issues: Visual Products, Allstar, Optitek, SpaceCam? Thanks

I'm pretty sure this is in reference to a thread I saw recently in which a shorted mount caused a non-functional camera and grey bands on the LCD... if my memory isn't failing me. And it was an Optitek Nikon mount which was involved there, I believe.

Another FD guy I see Michael... I wondered how long it would be before someone took a crack at 'mount'!

Which is your favored 24mm? The 1.4 L? I've heard varying opinions on that piece of glass. With a bit of luck I'm going to add a 35mm tilt/shift to my collection soon... now *that* could lead to some interesting shots!

Even with the info from Jacek, I'm still a bit concerned. Maybe I'm just getting worked up over nothing, but I'm pouring a huge portion of my savings and earnings into my Scarlet and kitting out my full shooting rig... My life would be easier with a Nikon G mount, but I cannot afford to risk the camera in any way.

The L designation was a marketing ploy by Canon. Prior to that, they used the word Aspherical. Same glass/optical design. That's what I have fotr my Canon superspeeds.

Yeah. I am always quick on the that's what she said jokes.

The question is who covers these issues? Does RED cover this if the mount has been approved by them and the camera is within warranty or is the company making the mount going to cover the repair or does the client have to pay themselves?

Would it be possible to get some info on where the problem is, i.e. it seems like it must be the pogo pins contacting the mount while camera is powered up. Not sure how that would happen - I have the Optitek mount which has a recess cut out for the pogo pins. seems like you would have to actually put the mount on while the camera has power, but I would rather not speculate.

Also, given that the design of the Epic is so nice in terms of just the four screws to remove to swap mounts and plenty of distance to the olpf/sensor - there will be a lot of interest in putting all manner of lenses on it. (It only takes me a few seconds more to swap mounts than it does to swap lenses.)

Since it should be just the back of the mount that is critical for safety, it might be very helpful for Red to make a lens mount blank, that all people would have to do is mill or suface grind down the front of the mount to the required Flange focal distance and attach a suitable lens mount (could use those from an extension tube, old camera, etc.) Something like this should be about $3 of aluminum, an hour or two for one of the CAD people to modify an existing drawing, and a few minutes of machining time on one of the fast CNC machines RED has been buying. I have thought of doing this myself, but would still want to go through the approval process - and really it would be much better coming from RED.

Probably needs to be looked at on a case by case basis initially, but generally speaking I don't think approval from Red would denote or imply a warranty or guarantee for a third party product - there are just too many variables and if we try to put it on Red then we won't get any of these mounts approved - which would be a bad thing.

It would be nice however, to have some way if possible in software to disable power to the pogo pins/mount area since the vast majority of people right now are using dumb lenses on Epic.
