Can anyone please explain why the instructions state NOT to re-use the button screws that secure
the PL mount when fitting the Canon mount? The button screws provided with the Canon TI mount
are the same are they not? Anyone from Red?

That's interesting Joe. I just received the Optitek Nikon mount, which didn't come with it's own screws so you must use the existing screws on the PL.

I'll be interested to hear what the reason is. Might be as simple as preserving the torx head and avoiding stripping from overuse? EDIT - heh, Stacey beat me to it!

I believe the thickness of the mounting plates are different between the PL and Canon mounts with the Canon being thinner.
If you use the PL mount screws on the Canon mount, you could drive them either into sensitive parts of the camera or bottom out in the screw holes, and have a loose mount.

As far as I can tell, the original PL mount screws are the same size as those provided with the Canon mount. The "DSMC CANON MOUNT INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS" identify both the PL screws and Canon screws as "M4x0.7 Button Screws" with a T-20 Torx drive. Both screws appear to be 8mm long measuring from bottom of the button head to tip of the screw shaft. Given that the screws are the same size, I remain unsure of the reason for changing screws when changing mounts.

Does this mean we should always use new screws when switching mounts? If so, does anyone know where to order extra screws?

I couldn't find these at Grainger. The closest I found are on Amazon, but I don't need 1,000 pieces!

Ideas?

Spares is always a good thing haha

I switched the mounts and reused the same screws but I'm not intending to continously switch between the two since I don't own a PL set and probably won't rent one anytime soon...

Obviously it's not going to short circuit the camera right? Same screws for both mounts...

The Nikon mount on the R1 when switched to Optitek got stripped - apparently different screws required, didn't realize till too late... but lesson learnt - I assume the new mount design for the EPIC means this won't ever since the screws are always the same?

Interresting, since i didn´t get any screws with my canon mount and didn´t even think of using other screws than the PL Mount screws.

Still no answer to the original question though!

I emailed RED support about this very question. They assured me that the screws are ALL the same, only color-matched to the mount. So they should be interchangeable across any RED DSMC mount.

The screws from my PL mount and my Canon mount are NOT the same length. But i also asked this question of Red as was told by tech support thru my bomb squad rep that there was no issue interchanging them. I was not able to order more since they were all allocated to shipping mounts at the time.

In a manual on Installation of a Canon Mount, it says NOT to reuse the screws and it is written in BOLD and that worries me. Many other things which are important in EPIC (for example) manual are not written in BOLD, but here the same model screws and in bold... Please someone from RED say something about it, we need the question answered. Thanks!

No new screws provided with the port bushing upgrade!

Weird. We carefully checked the screws that came with our Canon mount to the original PL mount. Identical. Maybe some earlier Canon mounts shipped with longer screws??
