  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sensor Crop a Possible Firmware Fix?

If you want to shoot 4k at 1080p, just buy a Ninja or KIpro and record 1080p off the SDI port. That gives a high quality deBayered output without cropping the sensor. You won't get the higher frame rates though.

I plan to shoot a lot of routine video stuff at 2k crop, 16mm sized image with 16mm lenses. If you want the larger sensor format and higher frame rates, Epic is the choice for now.

That is the best alternative i think! The Atomos Samurai is ready to ship and is the most economic SDI recording solution.

Only if Scarlet pushes more than 12/24fps over SDI while being in 5k or 4k-mode.
If its not more than that then a external recorder wouldn't help.

Ninja et al are 16:9 1080p recorders. From the frame rate chart 4k QHD 16:9 will do 30fps, so you can shoot normal HDTV production frame rates this way. Largest sensor mode that will give you full frame HD.

Of course use FULL DEBAYER! but using 2k from the 5k S35 sensor is like using half debayer... Not a good option.

This is what the majority of post pipelines out there are based on. Converting 5K into 2K. It's not at all like using half debayer as that would suggest you are throwing away color and luma information along with resolution which you are not.

As to OP it would be a waste of an additional module as you'd be throwing away the RAW and the resolution on set. You may as well just record off your hd-sdi out.

But what do you gain compared to just shooting QHD with 30fps? The thread-starter asked for a solution to shoot higher framerates without having to give up the fov of 4k. A external recorder could only help on that if Scarlet outputs more fps on sdi than it can record itself and of course, the recorder should be able to record more than 30fps at 1080p to really fill a gap here.

How can you tell the sensor to read only 1 pixel every second pixel? This yes, this no, this yes...

...wonder how they manage to do it with the 5D...?
