  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Extend remote range

Not right now. RED has stated that the Redmote will work if the camera is up on a crane, but not that far away.

In the future, there will be ways to control the camera via. your computer or iPad and maybe iPhone. I saw a prototype of the iPad app at NAB this year, it looked pretty awesome. It works via WiFi, so if you set up a WiFi network and get some extenders I'm sure you can do it. Sounds like a fun challenge!

I can see 1km for rocket launches or something similar, or wildlife filming. Imagine being quite a distance away watching lions walk up to the camera, and you can roll on it while they destroy the camera.

Does anyone know if it is possible to somehow amplify the range of the remote so it is useable up to say a kilometre?

I don't know the answer to this question, but I have some thoughts.

Clearly the answer is not with the Redmote. But the camera has an Ethernet connection. If I had that need, I'd try to talk to Deanan at Red about the possibility of controlling the camera through the Ethernet port, using wired or wireless network devices to span the distance, depending on the situation you're in.

Just a thought...

lol scarlet being licked by lions, i know Jim would love to see some footage of that haha - heck he probably already has that tape

Wireless for a kilometer is simple. There are various types of equipment available to do so. I have 1km of Fiber optic cable, and various video/ethernet converters.

The problem is not the wireless or the fiber or the ethernet... Its the protocol to control the Camera... The camera needs to run apache. The camera has Static and DHCP, plug into a switch and either extend ethernet over fibre optics or into directional antennas and 900mhz over ethernet.

Being able to control a Red camera over a great distance is a necessary feature, and in my opinion it has been greatly ignored by Red... What about underwater? What about crane lock offs? What about DITs and DPs who want to adjust settings on the fly? What about monitoring cameras remotely, temperature? What about working with 4+ cameras all great distances away and settings that need to be adjusted?
This cannot go unheard any longer.. Red must do this. Sony F65, F55, Phantom and Alexa all have control. Ipad control doesnt count, it should be http web remote.

We've worked with a NASA and a few private firms that launch rockets, and they've been happy with these two products that we make for wired control:

http://madlyfins.com/index.php?id_product=22&controller=product is a basic handheld device.

http://madlyfins.com/index.php?id_product=28&controller=product was found useful useful for triggering the EPIC/Scarlet with pre-existing camera systems for 35mm cameras.

We've been looking into wireless options as well, but there are many many ways to do it and we're waiting to figure out the most flexible and reliable way we can.

I'm talking about full control of the camera's menu systems. Very important too. Its been neglected for years...

Triggering is easy, It can be done with an ethernet Arduino and a relay to open a 3.3v circuit from across the planet.
