I'm looking for a set (or several) macro lenses to use with the Red MX. I'll need to frame up a smallish LCD screen (Approximately 8" X 5") so that I'm only seeing the LCD and not the surrounding bezel.
There are also several other tight inserts of hands on control buttons.

Any Macro suggestions ?

thank you.

Are you sure you mean macro not just a small object.

Some thoughts but not exaustive, Id swap the mount on Red MX to an A mount with suitable A mount lens mount, and Ideally use lecia R 100mm Apo Macro or Vogtlander 125mm Apo Lanthar, there after Zeiss 100mm and 60mm Macro or Contax Zeiss macro, or there is Nikon 105mm macro and 55mm macro. The Leica 100mm and Zeiss have been rehoused by VanDiemen and Dalsa and the Zeiss by Openheimer. What you spend hiring the PL variants you can invest in the A mount.

I not in a position to swap out the mount on the Red MX (which is currently PL).
I'm looking for PL mount lenses with the ability to focus very closely. Hopefully multiple focal lengths. I know Arri/Zeiss makes a 100mm Master Prime macro which will work for a couple of the shots but I'm looking for some wider focal lengths as well.

I see this as a 1-2 lens situation if all you will be capturing is a flat shot of a screen, and inserts of hands on buttons. If it were me I would take out a 50 & 75mm master prime or S4. 50 for the flat monitor shot and 75 for the inserts, I would stay away from the 100 or 135 so you can shoot around a 5.6 and not have to worry about too shallow focus. The 50 would be perfect for the flat shot ( honestly you could frame up many different focal lengths to get the same image if camera distance isn't an issue). I dont think you really need macro, but I don't know all the details... just a suggestion.

bringing this thread back from the dead!

I have a table top gig coming up where we shoot on a cooke 10-100 for most shots... This time around the director would like to get artsy and also do some macro kinds of shots as well. So in order to not kill our days we need a PL lens so as to not have to swap lens mounts every lens change...

So that super speed solution looks good, any other solutions people can recommend? We want to get in real close, I doubt the Masters mentioned above would be in our budget, so anything else relatively cheap to rent for a week that is PL that may work? Thank you!

I don't like the build quality, if you do a slight change of direction in focus the image shifts, seen it on multiple sets.

For the best macro lens ever, I would have thought the 100mm Arri master macro would take the prize

Agreed with Stephen - the 100mm T3.0 is better IMHO then the 200mm T4.3.
The 200 needs more light and needs to be farther away from the subject for the same magnification level - the later can be plus or con depending on your particular needs...

Get yourself a Vivitar 90mm f2.5 macro with the 1:1 diopter in M42 screw mount. Amazing lens: fantastic images, built like a tank and affordable!!! Then get a M42 to PL adaptor and you'll be able to use it as a macro with a PL mount.

Budget options in PL that won't break the bank:

I have / shoot tabletop food with the GL optics 100mm Macro that Bob is talking about. Build quality is fine if it's a personal use lens; I wouldn't want to buy this and rent it out to other productions... But if you do a cost vs. image comparison it's a good deal - no one outside of the studio will ever know what lens you used. (no matter what all the snobby lens blowhards will say)

The other crazy lens that I use for close up / close focus shots is... wait for it... The original 18-50mm RED Zoom. It's not 'Macro' but the close focus is 8" which means that an object 1.75" from the front element is in focus. Sometimes too close to light.

They are both T*3, but since you are doing close focus tabletop shooting; you'll be lighting it. Right?

Ziess macros- 16, 24, 32, 50, 60, 100…..

Call me Brian if you need them...
