  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining.

I can't, for the life of me, figure out why so many people insist on telling some us that we were wrong to want a 2/3" sensor in the first place, and even more wrong for being disappointed when it didn't appear. :emote_headwall:

As I have stated many times since Thursday, the Scarlet-X is a fabulous camera - so much so that I do expect to order one. But, that doesn't mean I wouldn't have preferred the Scarlet Fixed that was being developed. I get it - I understand why it was scrapped. I accept that. My disappointment will fade; if not well before I get my Scarlet-X, assuredly the day I start shooting with it. Just don't make me "wrong" for wanting what Jim was previously looking to offer.

I think those of us who were so loyal to the concept of the 2/3" Scarlet were actually expressing our trust that Jim and RED had a vision for a great "small"camera.

I love RED. And if I had the money I would go out and buy any/all of their products tomorrow. I too am disappointed that I can no longer afford the Scarlet. I don't fault RED for wanting to put out the absolute best camera. What gets me so worked up is that I've been living with the Scarlet dream for 3 years now...and what I was dreaming of didn't come to light. SO...I am only upset that RED pt so much info out BEFORE it was set in stone. Regardless of their decisions....if we hadn't been told about the $6k Scarlet....EVERYONE would be blown away right now with the Scarlet. That's all.....Maybe next product they launch they should just be SUPER secretive about it and only reveal the info. when it's already slated for production and people are told a date they can order one..... VIVA LA RED!!!!

I must say that I was pleasantly surprised with Scarlet-X. It's modularity and compatibility with S35 and FF35 lenses makes it a winner.
Scarlet-X coupled with a good quality Canon or Nikon zoom is going to be more adaptable than Scarlet fixed. It looks like the intelligent Canon and Nikon mounts are going to address the advantages that fixed-lens Scarlet was going to have.
I doubt RED is making a lot of money on Scarlet-X. They certainly do on the media and accessories, but that's just good business, I suppose.
Where I would like to see some improvement is that all the features and basic connectivity were enabled by now. I'd like to see 1:1 zoom while recording on one monitor while framing on another. I'd like to see remote power on/off, which is just basic functionality. It is remarkable that we can control over 100 functions remotely and power on is not one of them. I'd much prefer the opposite as I can not use any of the functions or make pictures without being able to turn the camera on in the first place.
Just my 2c.

To me the changes to Scarlet seem pretty obvious. I mean, how many posts did you see in the last two years asking for a bigger sensor, or 4K? While there is a market for 2/3" and I think the old Scarlet would've had a significant market, the market for Scarlet X is much bigger. Not only is it 4K and S35, with 5K stills and HDRx it's a real competitor in the stills market. Was 4.5MP a viable stills camera? Not really. 13MP? Definitely.

Am I a little disappointed about no more 3K 120fps + HDRx? Yes. But overall, I think the changes were for the better.

And complaining about the price, really? I can't afford it yet, but look at the competition in that price range. This blows the F3 and the C300 out of the water. It is in many ways superior to the Alexa, at 1/5 the price! That is going to push other companies to make more competitive products, and that's better for everyone.

I speak for those who now fear the ban-stick and won't say anything. I do not have that fear. I don't want to get banned, but if I do, it will be for standing up for all the little people who Red forgot about. The only one I am telling is wrong is Red.
Geez, reading your posts you'd think RED was sending people to concentration camps!

Look, all they did was decide not to make one camera and build another. Thats it. To the people saying RED "sold us on something different," I ask, when did RED take your deposit? Any kind of payment? You weren't sold anything, nothing was owed to you. Like I said before, I wholeheartedly believe RED had intentions of making a 2/3" camera. This wasn't a three year ploy just to piss you off. But whatever it was that caused it (and it was probably a lot of things), the plan changed. In fact, it changed several times along the way. The price slowly went up and RED was continually updating their projected offerings until last Thursday's announcement. The Epic-S disappeared at one point and different cameras folded into one. Now that they're ready to start manufacturing this thing, they can communicate the final specs and start taking money. Everything before that was just development musings. And like Tom said, the market has changed. Scarlet is the best camera they can make at a super aggressive price point, and frankly, makes Canon's new offering look downright silly in comparison.

With that in mind, please understand that I completely feel for the crowd dying for something acceptable in the $5,000 space. I was there once and the options aren't very exciting. Everything is over compressed, low res, and overpriced. And even the high-end stuff would be that way if it weren't for RED. Would a smaller sensor RED camera have been awesome for that market? Absolutely, no question about it. But they have decided to focus on making professional products that don't make the compromises the lower priced cameras are forced to make. I commend them for that, because it means their resources are going to be spent making the highest performing equipment possible, forcing the rest of the industry to keep up. Ultimately, that means better lower-priced cameras in time too.

In hindsight it was obvious you mean.

Jarred was shooting and promotional test videos on the 2/3, feels like 6 months ago. The skateboard one. I get the feeling RED abandoned 2/3 fixed very recently

I think that's absolutely the case. To which I say, would you prefer a RED that communicates nothing before a product launch? I think you'll get varied answers on that one. To me, I say absolutely not. There isn't a question in my mind that Epic and Scarlet are better cameras because of the dialogue we've had here. The alternative is what Canon gives you - and look at the result (by the way, you do have the option to buy that if you wish).

If you can't deal with the "things will always change, count on it" mantra, then just stay off Reduser and wait until things show up in the store. But I think a totally silent Red is the worst thing that could happen to this company. Fortunately, no matter how hard they try, I think it's in their DNA to share things with us... because they love and use these cameras just as much as we do.

Paul where did you hear that they are now going to put out a fixed Scarlet? Did you see Jim's post on the terminal issues with the fixed lens? It didnt hold focus through the focal lengths. I think it's dead. Maybe I misunderstood your post.

Haakon...I do understand and agree I guess. The truth is.....nothing is black or white. Their is no right or wrong with this. Only what happened. Yes, I'm disappointed. Nothing to do about it now. Move on. Buy one or not, right?

I completely agree Haakon. Red's open communication policy is one of the key aspects of what makes it great and unique. Not only talking about the advancements we get on the camera through this communication, but also the creation of this unique community. I hope this is part of Red's DNA, like you say, and stays like that.

Form factor and/or price seem to be the two main issues that I distil affecting those people now out of the loop.

One day, I would like one of my cameras to be that I can hold it comfortably and be able to shoot with one hand, RAW or lossless compression codec, prosumer price, say, $5k-$10k.

Red may not have done it yet, may do it in the future, and if not, Red definitely are inspiring whoever pulls it off first. These are exciting times, enjoying the ride. Best wishes to all.

I was taken by surprise by the Canon price point. I expected them to come in with something much cheaper. The fact that the C300 is $14k, says to me that a 2/3 Scarlet at $6 thousand would have had found a market. A 2/3 Scarlet against a video optimized 7D for $5k might have been DOA.

The Scarlet-X is a little bit of an son-of-Frankenstein afterthought, but it's a really great B and C camera for Epic shoots. That might open up rental house interest for them that a 2/3 Scarlet might not have. With brain at 10k and media running as pricey as Red SSDs, it can hardly be considered a prosumer camera as the 2/3 would have been and the 7D is.

If they come out with a non-fixed-lens 2/3 Scarlet for say 4k - that might be a great crash cam with 16mm glass. Still with compact flash - ei very cheap... might sell a few. Seems like a waste to lose all that R&D.

Just to correct one point - I believe the C300 is $20K.

That's retail. Street price, I heard 14k. But I don't really know.

Actually, I did pay. I bought almost every accessory I could from Red in good faith. They were listed as Scarlet compatible, not Scarlet-X. I will be out several hundred dollars in restocking fees. I bought media, power, a side handle, etc. In good faith. Not to mention a monitor and over grand's worth of lenses from third parties. Not to mention endless hours over the years drooling over vaporware. I can't get my time back, but I may be able to recoup some of my money. Maybe. Do you now understand my bait-and-switch sentiment?

However, I have spoken my piece. I have nothing else to add to my argument.

When I think about it, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's Canon (or Panasonic) who comes out with a fixed 2/3" (or 4/3") camera similar to the "old" Scarlet. One would think there's a void now to be filled, and sales would be quite high. Even if it's not 4k, or 3k for that matter.

I don't think many people are questioning that. See my post #131 in this thread. I think it's more about where RED wants to be as a company and spend their resources moving forward.

If it shoots RAW, I'd consider it. Not holding my breath for that, however.

Kyle - given that a lot of accessories are backordered and might remain so for awhile, you might have better luck selling them here on REDuser for quick delivery. Just a thought.
