  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I am really really HAPPY with Scarlet-X!!!!!

I am really really HAPPY with Scarlet-X!!!!!

I am disappointed that the launch of Scarlet-X has turned into to such a toxic waste dump.

I was hoping for many more enthusiastic but real (not fan-boy) types of expression of useful gratitude to RED and red team for Scarlet X. Instead all we have are toxic and negative labored threads. Threads about how everybody has been ripped off.

This camera at least for US does indeed fulfill our actual and technical requirements beyond our wildest imaginings. We could not afford to demonstrate our true and technical capabilities with full blown EPICs.

OK so we totally lucked out.

BUT maybe some others could chime in and express why they feel for them (personally) why the SCARLET-X is going to serve their needs very well.

I’m going to leave this to everyone else, but this total toxic negativity thing is really starting to totally sour the first days of Scarlet based REDUSER.

(well done guys!)…

JIM you have saved our bacon…hopefully one day I get to explain to you in person exactly why.

The only ones complaining are those who don't have the money to buy it. So save up your money and then buy it. Or go buy a camera you can afford. It's that simple. This camera is within reach of anyone who has a job and the ability to be tight with their money until they can save up enough to buy it. It is an investment that will require sacrifice for many. My advice? Cancel your cable subscription, downgrade from your iPhone to a flip phone, eat Ramen noodles and never go out drinking. You'll be a Scarlet-X owner in no time.
 
I am extremely happy with SCARLET X, and they will serve me, us, very well in just about all the very same jobs applications that our EPIC M cameras would,
but hose that require higher frame rates and much lower compression...

Also if there are dangerous shots, we would use the SCARLET instead of the EPIC M or X for sure, given the big cost difference, and a much lesser financial
loss, in case things go wrong, insurance or not.

But we must also not just say that those not happy about SCARLET X are those that can't afford to buy one, as it is not so, well, not entirely, what I believe is that there
should have been a big distinction of things.

Were those that again as i stated in already so many different threads (infact there is way too many new threads started about this same subject,
we shoudl just post in those alrerady existing) I too miss the Fix SCARLET

HOWEVER....

I don't make a huge fuss about the SCARLET X not been the right camera or this or that... I just miss not having the Fix SCARLET I too was waiting for it, and
again I'll say Believe me so does Jim and Jarred, and the Red team, but that camera no longer is here with us, amongst us, yet I see no reason to put down SCARLET X so much,
don't like it don't buy it, can't afford one, go work and save some more money for it... I never could afford anything till I really basted up my A%$@ and save up for it.

Other then this, I wish for a less whining and a more productive discussion in this forum which has been my home for the past 5 years, home of great discussions, and lately
I read mostly a bunch of crap about the same thing...

NOTHING!!

I respect those missing the Fix SCARLET, I just don't respect how most of them have decided to express how they fill, that is all.
 
X is the Scarlet I always wanted... From day one. Sure I would like 4k 60fps or better, but I don't need it. A FF sensor will be nice one day perhaps, but that also is luxurious. The Scarlet-X will make a fine entry level, professional cinema camera for me. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I am overjoyed that Red exceeded my expectations and is delivering the "Epic-S" early. I was never interested in a fixed lens system or 3k, so for me, waiting for that model to ship was just a thing that had to be endured.

I feel for those who were disappointed on the third but there are other options out there, and as someone else posted, for some of them a battle tested Red One will be a real option soon.

Yes this camera costs money. .....mmmmm funny that. Surely if you only shoot 12 times a year , once a month, you afford this camera (body only) instead of paying rental fees for a similar spec'd camera & that's something else to be happy about!!!

@ Carey I'm not so sure I would be happy about not going out at night drinking ;)

I think Scarlet X is an exceptional value and a remarkable camera that ticks a lot of the right boxes at a body price/performance level equal to the initially announced price range for FF35 Scarlet. Considering all that has happened in the world since 2008 that is a remarkable achievement.
 
I love it...I wanted the epic s but couldn't afford it and this is a little cheaper, but I could not afford it. this is a little less projected specs then epic s, but lower projected price, so this is perfect, I just wasent prepared...need to save more ;)

I bought one, I can afford as many as my production needs, but i am not happy about dropping fixed, i would gladly paid even more for the fixed than I paid for the X;
and how you people can be happy with the camera you haven't even shot a single frame with, and there is no even 1.5 seconds compressed mp4 on the net from it, forget the R3D for everyone before they make a little hole in their bank accounts?
don't tell me I don't need to see R3D from Scarlet , I have trust in RED,
trust what?

I could afford a full Scarlet-X kit by the end of the year but, for now, I won't buy it because :

- I don't want to work with a S35 sensor, not enough DOF, focus pulling is critical
- not a lightweight rig at all
- the 3.9 crop factor at 2K : nearly impossible to get a proper wide lense/POV
- the Terabytes of data I should handle working at 4K - don't plan to buy a LTO tape system soon/ multiple SSDs / multiple HDDs
- the lack of real slomo abilities at 2K/3K

I'll wait & see...again !

Well not exactly... but good question.

I am very grateful because 99.9999999% of cameras that we need for our application are basically NOT right. We work with very high precision systems for much larger digital formats where we virtually have to re-engineer everything. We are a small group and mainly also develop software and have patents in most significant territories. Such an R&D to useful product outfit is risky and very expensive. So for us to crack very difficult problems and secure our IP has been very much an uphill slog and blood bath at the absolute bleeding edge of technology. The Epic-s means we don’t have devise weird methods for emulating EPICS for real and it means we can demonstrate our full capability without having to shell out for a whole slew of EPICs. This is all largely self funded (private) with a few close partners.

So in short this will save us hundreds of thousands of dollars and will cut 18 months to two years of development time. It also means we can develop really amazing and innovative and cost effect yet powerful new HW and software capabilities that will be useful to other Scarlet-S and Epic users rather than have our technologies only be used for government/very advanced applications.

So for us this is a huge break and a huge leg up… they “RED” didn’t have to roll out what they did.

So for us this is the exception as other camera manufacturer’s are not building the kinds of things we can really run with.


So yes I am very grateful.

These kinds of breaks virtually never happen.

The Scarlet X is unbelievably fitting perfectly into my needs. Increased resolution, Increased Stills capacity ... tremendeous video quality (we dont have the downscale advantage of the 5k on Epic, but seriously ... at this price, ... what was it that started the careers of tons of people who jumped on board the Red One M?) Working in the stills/print industry with recurring needs in product photography, art photography and presentation videos WE COULDN'T BE BETTER OFF. You throw the door open to use all our Canon glass.

I do feel sorry for the run and gun guys. Hope they score another day.

Thanks Thommes, for coming forward and saying positive things that are real.

I think the Scarlet-X is an amazing opportunity. If we are successful then we are able to put our own very powerful tools and techniques and new capabilities into the hands of others. When that happens then other individuals outfits and organizations can offer their services and new capabilities with these tools. This causes a wave of innovation that creates also further new opportunities as well as new jobs and gainful employment. I’m not the only one that sees that and I think the Scarlet-X will be seen as the key to unlock a hell of a lot of capability and tallent in many different areas. It’s just right now most people are not looking or thinking that way. Time will tell. I’m not the only one that sees these opportunities. Given the current world economic situation this is an absolute life line for folks that work in our areas and beyond.

Lol. I think it's overstating it to give the impression that it's all bitching going on. I feel like at least 60% of the people are very, very happy with it. Maybe 20% are neutral but are impressed. 10% are slightly disappointed but also still very impressed. And then maybe 10% at most are really upset.

Of course, that's pure guess - no science backing that assessment, just a feeling I get.

Overall, put yourself in Red's shoes ... "you can't please everyone all the time" - I believed they listened and careered to the majority, and also to their core principles (one of which says that 4k is key).

Also, geez, if you read about the announcement outside Reduser on tech blogs and such -- which is usually EXTREMELY attacking toward Red, I was pretty blown away by how favorable it was.

I think the issue is that the 10% who are most upset post the most (and the loudest), and therefore create the impression of more discontent than there actually is.
