Do you have to use a red monitor/evf or can any other monitor be used via HDMI or HDSDI output? This could save a little start up cost for those of us who are on a budget.
Is it possible, I'd like to use my SmallHD DP6 via the HDMI output, then use the DSMC side handle to change settings.

Thanks in advance for any info

Yea, even I was curious! How about an ipad? Can we use it as a monitor?

Epic and Scarlet can provide a standard (1280 x 720p or 1920 x 1080p) frame size output on HDMI or on HD-SDI.

I'm using a Marshall Monitor V-LCD-70XP-HDMI on a R1 MX, but dunno how to get the Red menu on the monitor. Can anyone guide me how to do that?

Depends if that monitor will support 1280 x 848 or only 1280 x 720.. Try changing the camera's MONITOR OUT to MENUS. If you see an image that is the full menus display, if you see no image switch back to VIDEO, in which case you see the central 1280 x 720 area of the full menus display.

Do the Red monitors use external batteries like the Small HD DP6? Or are they powered by the camera source? They appear to be powered by the camera source but I could be wrong.

Have a look at the TV Logic high end 7 inchers. We feel they are the best of what's out there just now in an LCD. We are using them for the aerial setup on Hobbit. They were set to mimic the central reference grading monitor and they have remained absolutely constant and a reliable source for viewfinding. They are fed the HD SDI signal via a fiber optic link that we make.
Another option especially for night shooting is the Sony OLED line. Incredible latitude into the black areas.
Oh yes the HD SDI does display the same graphics as the Red touch screen.
