  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet-X technical Q&A

If it does crop that limits you quite a bit. I got really excited when I saw 3K does HDRX but if 3K is cropped then we will struggle to get any wides at all. I think my maths is right:
13,824,000 - 5K
8,847,360 - 4K
4,976,640 - 3K

So the crop factor to 4K is 1.56 and to 3K is 2.78

Therefor a 24mm on 4K looks more like a 37mm and on 3K looks more like a 66mm.

Side by Side 3d minimum spacing?

Side by Side 3d minimum spacing?

Perhaps this could be answered in the Epic areas as well, but :

Q: what would I expect the inter-lens distance to be, mounting two Scarlets in a side-by-side configuration, both cams right side up?
( Is the Scarlet case just as wide as the Epic now ... I think it is )

I know it's going to be a bit hyper-stereo, but I am not doing much closeup work.

Noob question: do I need to order a mini xlr cable with my Scarlet? The cable listing in the store says it only works with R1.

HDRx
Q: what are the various frame rates and corresponding resolutions and compression ratios available when shooting HDRx with Scarlet X?

IS 4K, 3K, 2K fullframe to or its only crpoping senzor?

4K, 3K, 2K and 1K is cropped sensor.

I don't know if my math is correct, but does that mean that when I'm going for 1K I have a crop factor of 25? (5K = full senzor size = 5120*2700 = 13,824,000 and 1K = 1024*540 = 552,960 --> 5K/1K = 25).

So 4K is like APS-c 3K - 4/3, 2K 16mm film and 1K is somewhere between 2/3 or 1/3 right?
and if i shoot in 4k and recording via hdmi or hd-sdi i have full frame fullhd?

thanks for reply

Jim,

Are there maximum compression settings - is 7:1 the max that the Scarlet can do? Based on your 55MB/s stat, we should be able to shoot 5K 24fps FF at about 8.5:1. Can the camera not compress this much data that quickly?

Then based on that, we should be able to shoot 24fps at 5K FF at 8.5:1. If you look at the Red Data Rates and times chart for 128GB SSD, about 39 minutes is equal to 55MB/s. Wouldn't that be something they'd want to advertise, just like how the Epic can't shoot 120fps at 5K FF, but can at lower frame sizes and data rates?
