  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Leica M mount is now available for Epic...

You might like to check out the new Leica M mount front for the Epic from SpaceCam Systems. It accepts all M mount lenses in which the rear lens assembly does not protrude beyond the aft surface of the lens mount itself. This restricts somewhat the use of Leica M lenses of 35mm or shorter focal lengths, but FL's of 20mm and 35mm are still available. Over the 35mm focal length, virtually all of the Leica M glass is useable. These rules apply equally to Leitz and Voightlander M mounted optics.

Additionally, the Leica M camera front accepts a variety of Leica M to Nikon, Canon, Leica R and Contax adapters that really opens up the tool box for everyone. There's a reason why the Leica M lenses are legendary!

Do you know of a way to mount a Voightlander 25mm F.95 M43 (or any M43 lens for that matter) to Red cameras?
 
That particular lens is designed for the four thirds format. Imaging area of that particular sensor is 17.3 x 13.6mm so this lens will not cover the Epic sensor. If you want the highest performing ultra fast lens in the world you should beg, borrow or buy the Leica Noctilux 50mm F.95. It is mountable on the SpaceCam Leica M mount on the Epic and produces jaw dropping results.

Hi Greg: The Leica M lenses that are currently useable on the Epic includes the Tri Elmar 16-18-21mm set to 21mm, the Tri Elmar 28-35-50mm F4 (total range), some 35mm F2 Summicrons and the 35mm Summarit F2.5.. All lenses longer than 35mm are useable.
The rule here is that the rear element of the lens cannot protrude into the camera farther than the aft most edge of the lens own mount.
Also useable are several M mount lenses from Voightlander and Zeiss. We are hoping to work with Red to open up clearance in the front wall of the Epic to allow all lenses to be used in the future.

Would it cover at 3 or 4K? Was just wondering since I have both the V 25mm F.95 and 50mm F1.1 that I use on the AF100. It's like having night vision and has crazy DOF . . . oh and, they're paid for
 
The other issue is that the back flange distance on lenses designed for the m43 format is even shorter. The design of the Epic simply will not permit a mount any closer to the sensor than the Leica M mount...thats the limit at this time. If the lens in question will not cover the full sensor than you will have to crop. Generally if you divide 5K by 1.3 you will end up with a good estimate of the pixels receiving light ...that is if you could ever get the lens mounted to the camera.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to investigate further since a F.95 lens shooting 300FPS @2K would seem to be a good thing - reduces the light needed issue

Has RED approved this mount? What's the lead time on an order?
 
Jackson, the Leica M mount is made by SpaceCam Systems and is available on our website spacecam.com. It has been examined by Red and Jarred has informed us that it will not affect any camera warranty. We are just completing a production run of 12 units next week so with special coatings and engraving they should be ready to ship two weeks from this date.

All I want from this is to be able to slap on my Summilux 35mm now and perhaps a 21/24 summilux...so please make it possible soon :D

I cant wait to put the nocti on it! 300fps on that baby will be so damn sweet!

Have you guys sent the final specified mount to RED and they approved it? I know you said you had before but I also thought you guys did some changes to it? Better yet, can Jarred or one of the RED team chime in here and give the thumbs up...
 
Yes we have sent it to Red and they have informed us that there is no problem affecting the warranty. The unit provided to them was the final production version. The current production run will have some engraving changes, different metal coatings and a metal alloy change to one part...that's it. Oh yes...and we are giving Jarred this version as well!
