  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDCINE-X Professional Build 4 Beta...

Was able to download Mac version by clicking on the link. However, when opening the previous older version and selecting "Check for Updates" Redcine-X tells me "I'm up to date."

Not at all a problem, but I thought Red team should be aware. Thanks!

I have one client that still insists on getting 4:3 SD masters. I've tried to tell them to go to 16:9 but it hasn't happened yet. I have tried maybe 2 dozen times to do facilitate this cropping in REDRushes, REDCINE-X, REDCINE-X Pro and occasionally I can get it close to working. Almost... close... But it has never worked. The presets in the framing tabs don't save, they don't allow me to type in numbers in the origin boxes more than a small percentage of the time and overall the whole thing is wonky. Even if everything seems correct it always renders differently than expected. I cannot for the life of me, put the crop box where i want it in this newest version. I end up having to use Compressor. It's really sad. The thing is that if it won't work I would rather not have it included. Like I said, it's NEVER actually worked how it should. I've spent maybe 10-15 hours rendering and retrying hundreds of times. I know this software is free and that we are getting it out of the goodness out of your hearts etc... But seriously, if it doesn't work, please just keep it out. Wait until it's done and add it to the program then. It has been super frustrating to me because I always have that hope that in the couple of months since I've tried it that it will finally be functional. It is not. Please fix the framing controls and make them work. Thank you.

Hi Justin,

If there's a problem with the cropping for you we'd like to find out why.
Cropping and scaling is done on alot of workflows out there so we're
sure it's working. If there's a particular case that's breaking
for you, we'd like to replicate it here.

Can you turn on verbose logging and recreate your setup and then
send a report (save report under help) to redcinex at red . com.
screen shots would also help.

That's it? ;) - somebody should do a history project and document all the Red Cine Builds... thanks Deanan and TEAM RED. I know this stuff is hard, but man is it getting better and better and better and better.

I'll post a video shortly of it working and how to do it. I've used crop and scale ever since the beginning nearly every day and it works. I've personally used the tools mentioned for Summer Vacation (Mel Gibson), Pirates 4 (Johnny Dep), Spider-man (Andrew Garfield), and currently on a show with Leo and Toby down in Australia (google it).

Thank you for the quick reply Deanan. I got this version to work better if I switch it to Stretch W/H. It rendered fine after that. Fit width makes the Origin fields unable to be typed in though and the way to make the square itself is kinda difficult to make it exact because I can't pull up on it, it was a little easier to use on the old REDCINE.

The Center Crop function would work a lot better in my opinion if it just took the center of the image not the center minus a title safe or whatever it's doing now. If I'm going 4:3 then I need that title safe area to still be there for the title safe. If it were as simple as that button doing that then it would make it so much easier to do 4:3 stuff. Thanks again.

Center crop + Fit width will not let you set origin because it's calculate automatically so it's centered.
So you all you set there is width/height.

If you want a different center crop, switch to custom and you can enter width/height.

If you choose stretch, that means it will deform the cropped image to the output size. I don't think that's what you want.

I am surprised at how little it loads the GPU and how moderate the RAM use is. I see a heavy CPU load. Does anybody know how many cores one can throw at this for optimum performance? I will have to upgrade my favourite workstation next year, and wonder if a 12 or more core system is a better fit for RCX than slightly faster 8-core system.

Just want to direct this to all of the incredibly hard working programmers at Team RED. I'm sure there are many of you that are not individually thanked publicly... this is for you:

ROCK ON !!!!!!!!!!

OK, back to work. ;-)

OH MAN I've been really expanding / refining my use of redcine in the past few weeks.... been struggling with a lot of these issues. Thanks a bunch! This will definitely make the rest of my week easier... :D

Bob,

You can launch the manual from the Help menu.
