  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I want to tell you...

November 3rd won't be about what we are working on. It will be about what is done and what we are ready to take orders on. Finally.

Jim
I hope everyone keeps this in mind. Personally, I doubt very much, that the multi focus and depth map features are anywhere close to the delivery state...

Of course not. He said they were working on it. If it was due to be sold within 2 weeks it would be done by now - but perhaps as a future sensor update.

Could this high-res enhancement of the "Lytros effect" that the RED army is working on enable a 2/3" Scarlet to replicate the bokeh of S35 sized sensors [...]?

The problem with replicating the bokeh of a S35 sized sensor from a 2/3" sensor would be that it physically wouldn't be able to "see" everything that a S35 sensor could see. DOF is essentially the result of parallax. If you had say a fence post the S35 sensor could physically see around the edge of the fence post. Whenever you try to create that information from scratch lots of artifacts start popping up. So while it's easy to reduce the DOF of a large sensor you are physically limited when trying to increase DOF except as a post-DOF cheat.

3:45am Sunday morning and here we are. This points to several personality disorders.

No, no. This is what happens when we are on the cusp of something incredible. Like waiting in line at midnight to watch The Hobbit, or The Dark Knight, you know you are about to see something amazing and on Nov. 3rd I'm sure we are going to see something mind blowing.

I work on your typical summer blockbuster doing lighting, specifically 3d lighting. No amount of processor power is going to allow you to light this synthetically. The problem is, even if you where able to match everything perfectly automatically, it would look wrong, why? Well, simply because it can be changed. Directors and vfx sups. just can't help themselves from fiddling with things. In my 15 year carreer we've gone through this before, ray-tracing, occlusion, global ilumination, now HDRI, etc, etc. From the moment they first see the composited image, no matter how perfect, they have to mess with it, just because they can. But I'm sure it will help for other things that we probably can't even think about right now.
Steven

I promised myself I wouldn’t get sucked into this.

You RED herring B-stards!!! (that is directed to the RED very clever and super tallented, very funny and shiny/wonderful people at RED/RED TEAM…); I’ll get you guys back one day…(he, he, he...or not..?).

RED definitely put the RED in Herring…

Squinonescolon…Absolutely. Spot on...

At the moment and for a substantial number of years we have been working on one of the most sophisticated S_3d based reality capture systems on the planet. Right now we use mainly Medium format/higher res, but have built for a long time stuff for dynamics.

One of the major advantages of what we do is to have very precise X Y and critically Z geometry. We have new techniques that basically resolve the difference between the standard incompatibilities with apparent Stereo space with actual space and also explicitly modeled 3d spaces I.e. virtual ones. OK we have patents granted for this and that and the core techniques/technologies. Blah blah blah big deal bow wow, woof woof..

One of the MAIN (if you like) selling points is that we are able to record the scene in mind blowing complexity in way that are amazingly efficient and life like…BUT pay attention…the main selling point ….being AS NATURALLY LIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Basically we if you will (which is not exactly what we are doing) bake in to all of the 3d surfaces the naturally captured stereo textures, that contain ALL of the natural complexity without losing a single thing. You can visualize this from different virtual view points. The advantage of this techniques over laser and (plenoptic thinking etc) is that the complex reflections and surface interactions are all embedded into the surface naturally as your left eye would see it and as you right eye would see it. I.e real complex depth NOT ironed on flat wall paper textures crudely lit in CG.

THE WHOLE PROBLEM WITH CG is that we have now reached an almost absolute asymptote as to what can be achieved in realism; that's why we push the idea of the best and natural in beautiful complex lighting as LIT by the camera lighting man and other EXPERTS IN REAL LIGHTING USING NATURAL LIGHT. We can grab that for s-3d going into 3d (explicit) CG and out to s-3d (again final output).

In more conventional systems basically the fine 3d surface texture that should be there is NOT, or at least it’s totally wrong, when you light form different directions virtually then what happens is the basic differences/conflicts becomes ALL to immediately apparent I.E it looks like a video game. VERY basic physics… You will never be able to capture sufficient 3d surface detail from a plenoptic system to virtually re-light in a way that just frankly is not very good, unless you are being VERY VERY subtle.

Come on guys REAL LENSES, REAL LIGHTS, REAL CRAFTMANSHIP…AND REAL DIGITAL CINEMATIC CAMERAS..!

(come on guys get a grip…(so to speak) :)

At very least with Scarlet and the really high res stuff (we do) when what we are doing is finally out there, this will allow us to "strut our funky stuff…".

Scarlet is going to have some really excellent stereo s-3d applications (you can count on that!). For Plenoptic system to work to some ridiculous degree the sensor would have to be 20” wide (at least).

We are also build/building extremely precise (military grade very high res cameras (not dynamic (as such)) with special precision movements.

You guys drove me off the cliff but at least I got to say

Scarlet 3k, New REDONE 4K, EPIC 5K and DRAGON 6K, all in one type of body…
Arggggggg!

RED LYTROS jumped the shark 150-200 posts ago….

Ozzy Ozbourne “I luv you guys...but you are all F*icking maaaaad!!”

This is MONDAY…what will TUESDAY BRING TO RED USER, its like the twelve days of Christmas or a really F’d up advent calendar. What little cardboard tab will we pull off tomorrow? (that's not a drug refernce but a religious holiday reference...or is it....hmmm?)

Yours adoringly,

Eric

[Foot note]:

We are hoping that true opticals (i.e. real models, sets, props, atmospherics and pyrotechnics) all come back into fashion as a result of what we are doing (I think they already are anyway), even my kids who are still quite young say the original Star Wars movies that “Opa “ worked on look more realistic than Episode I, II and III. I think that really underscores the difference between really good large scale models and physical effects with natural surface complexity and lighting vs CG. We hope to bridge that gap (one day sooner rather than later).

They did not specify what information they hid in the invite. Could be something we already know... Like they made a Scarlet and its ready.

SAVE THE DATE, COLOR IT SCARLET.

Or maybe even the time of the event. 5pm-8pm

the difference is 3 hours

But the average puts us at 6pm, the time they said they would announce...

Maybe 5pm-8pm could also mean the price point.

$5000 for brain
and $8000 for a package.

Not acting as spoiler.
Just checking if this is our big guy!
Amazing new technology.
Check their site out.

Thanks Jared – will keep both your initial and follow up posts “un-public.”

I thought the hint was to bring an ipad. That they will unveil an ipad app.

I thought the "upgradeable" concept meant if you have outgrown your scarlet, you just buy a new Epic S brain, and when you outgrow that, you buy an Epic-X brain.

So the Red 1 upgrade path would be straight to Epic-X. And Epic-X will go to whatever future cameras they make.

It just means you won't have to rebuy the media/evf, monitor, battery packs, etc.

I don't think it means that you will upgrade the sensors, like MX or Dragon...

I think the Nov. 3rd will just be the specs on Scarlet, and we should be excited if they are better than the original specs.

Just my guesses, anything more is just bonus.

Is it Nov 3rd yet? I can't bear to look at a calendar. Reduser has become a worse addiction than facebook. ;)

Using traditionally-trained DPs to do CG lighting...where have I heard that before? http://erichocean.com/fohr/lighting.html

Eric, take a look here:

reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?65083-To-buy-or-not-to-buy-Lytro-Light-Field-camera.

I've added further revelations about possible techniques. I am hopeful about this new Scarlet revelation, even if it doesn't use one of my techniques. Groovy, if we could get 4k and this, it would be a great day, however I'm going over to the Contagion thread for one of my first picture performance reviews here. The answers to my observations might be very pertinent.
