I have read a lot of the posts regarding Scarlet. There are so many unrealistic expectations that it takes the wind out of our sails.

Some people apparently have no idea what realistic is.

"Why not 28K at 1000fps RAW in a raisin box for $800?"

We are so happy to have a complete competitive advantage. We consider our customers as one of us. What we have always done is beat the competition in price/performance. But the misguided expectations for Scarlet are killing me.

You should expect a lot from us. But within reason. Really.

Measure us against our competitors... not your fantasies.

Nothing competes with EPIC. Nothing will compete with Scarlet... except your wildest dreams.

Get real. Get real before November 3rd. Or you will be unnecessarily disappointed. Which is totally unnecessary.

Good to have a reality check, but as you say it will be heads above the rest of the camera manufactures. Looking forward to the 3rd in the UK

The last semi-official stuff we heard was 8X Fixed 2/3" 3K at 120fps for around $6K... and that still blows my mind. We still didn't have much info on what the package contains but "shootable out of the box" knowing what goes into that with the workflow is also a feat of technical and financial near-miracle. I don't know how expectations got so far away from this, but to me, this is still the camera I want. Anything more and I'm gonna dance around the room.

To be honest, I think that the escalating expectations are a product of uncontrollable excitment. I don't think there's going to be a single person who'll be dissappointed on the 3rd.

And like Andrew, I'm looking forward to a late night on the 3rd, computer warmed up - coffee in my hand, and a folder of projects ready to go!

3K @ 120 fps + fixed zoom with a reasonable price for the starting kit would be great.

If anyone is disappointed in the Scarlet Nov. 3rd announcement... they suck. And we won't lose one minute of sleep. The announcement is just too good.

As a wish list.
3k @ 120fps interchangeable shooting kit (with one lens included) for around $9000
But maybe that in itself if fantasy ;)

I hear you Jim. After dealing with clients that want their $500 interview video to be the next Citizen Cain, I completely understand.

If that is what our $6K gets us then it is a day one purchase for me. That is really great value.

I was never disappointed in the past. I cant imagine, that I will be disappointed this time. Scarlet will rock!

Jim,
I agree with you that there has been lot of speculation about the specs of Scarlet. However, I won't totally fault people here for such expectations. The reason is that the people here believe that you can achieve anything, which can be justified to a large extent due to you being a superb leader leading from the front. They have raised you to demi-god status. And when you say that Nov. 3rd is going to be a historic day along with all the talks of bringing a bazooka to a knife fight, people have taken it for granted that they are going to be showered with gems in exchange for a few coins. That is the good and bad part of having a loyalist fan base. Tempering expectations is the key so that people don't get disappointed even when you launch a great product.

I am sure that there will be a few folks who will trash the specs and/or pricing of scarlet once it is launched. There will also be talks of how RED is going the Canon/Sony/any big corporation way etc etc. Also, it happens probably due to a an insecurity complex where people who are never going to use this product will start trashing it. Recently such behaviour was seen after the launch of Canon's 1 D X. Similarly Nikon D3 was also trashed. It happens. However, once the dust settles, the folks who want to buy Scarlet and/or any product that you are going to announce, will compare the specs and decide if they can extract sufficient value for themselves to justify the purchase. So you shouldn't feel to bad.

I feel pretty excited watching how RED is developing a follower base like Apple did. Ofcourse the product categories are different. Nevertheless, it is interesting that the same kind of followership is witnessd even in a higher priced product category (for want of a better word). Waiting for Nov 3rd to come soon.

Cheers,
Sabyasachi
PS:By the way, how many times people have raised the expectations (in percentage terms?), so that we can reduce that from your stated specs and arrive at the scarlet specs. :-)

Be realistic, everybody understands that 4K, 120 fps, PL mount will be very good for arround 18K (ready to shot without lenses) (mini Epic and I think it will be former Scarlet S35)

Why not just wait until we announce before guessing?

I sit in a square in Florence and throw some bread out and the pigeons come around.

First I say, "look at all the nice pigeons."

Then I quickly realize that they are shitting all over everything.

Reduser at its worst in a nutshell.

Hehe now everyone will put their expectations "back" to 3K :-)
For me 3K is "good enough" for Scarlet as we know it, it surely won't be any disapointment...

...but as the Epic-S haven't been mentionned for a while, i'm a bit scared there won't be a product between Scarlet and Epic-X.
99% of my work don't need (and first of all i can't afford) 5K at 120fps neither need HDRx, both features very demanding in processing power.

But for instance i need Epic low light performances for 70% of my work. And that's why Epic-S or whatever-this-cam-could-be-called... would be able to do this, and this is very important. Maybe it will be Scarlet, that would be great.

Maybe those big changes Jim is talking have more to do with in-camera performances than just specs.
If Scarlet with a 2/3 sensor can provide at 3K what Epic does at S35/5K, i will embrace that revolution with no further question. Period.

Jim, I had a pleasure to unwrap my Epic-X today. I was blown away with beautiful build quality and refinement. Certainly above expectations. But, when just looking at the specs, I can hardly believe my eyes that a camera like this was even possible, let alone affordable.
