EPIC traveling on an airplane

sorry but what is a carnet?

http://www.uscib.org/index.asp?documentID=1843

A document to help you not get caught up in EXPORT / IMPORT laws as you travel from country to country...

eg. Most countries have a $300 to $500 tax free limit. Take in commercial goods any more than that and you can find yourself paying for 10% to 30% of the goods actual cost to get them back.... and a FINE.... and a mark against your name in your passport for ever!!!!
Trust me.. you don't want that.

.....and NOT all countries will recognize a carnet...so you must do your homeowork....but this is for US residents as far as i know. or US based companies.....unless other coutries have their own carnets.... I know in Mexico i cannot get one. But US i do often.

Personally, i'm more worried about the plane fueling up and some idiot dropping a wrench and making a spark OR avionics failure....the UPS flight that crashed was easy to blame LiIon batts, but never actually determined....anyway, guess we live with risk daily.

with batts, bring them hand luggage, tape the ends with clear tape and just be smart.....

Oooh, I was unaware of a downed UPS flight. Time to hit Google. I thought it was overheating in laptops and such that prompted it. Taping contacts is a great idea for transport. Battery+spare change=hot pocket!

Anyway, I don't remember the last time I heard of a fueling accident killing passengers in spite of the thousands of planes that fill up each day, so I'm quite all right with that risk.

When I mentioned radiation, I remember people telling me that, since you are up in thinner atmosphere and therefore receive more than the normal dose of natural radiation, that higher exposure can actually damage delicate chips, such as sensors. Was this all hooey?

A1 jet fuel have a flash point of more than 38degC, so unless there is a major spill onto the ground on a really really hot day to get the fuel to flash off significantly, you have little to worry about regarding dropped wrenches etc.
The "Yippee ki-yay MF!" scene of die hard, when the jet takes off in the blizzard with the trailing flame path, would be really hard to do in real life unless they fueled it up with heptane or something more volatile. But then they wouldn't be able to get the engines running again...

Nope, but the probability of it happening in practice is incredibly slim.
Have you ever heard stories of people regularly getting mobile phones go dead during flights unexpectedly or electronic devices in planes get killed by cosmic radiation? It probably have happened to somebody.
If you are really worried google or search on Wikipedia for "Graded Z shielding" and order a camera case lined with the metal foils required to fulfill your needs. Its what some satellite designs use to shield its detectors from cosmic rays. When RED delivers NASA a camera for the next Moon or Mars lander they probably will do something like that with the cameras just to be sure.

Nice! Just did some poking around and that seems to be the consensus.

Carnets are not required for personal items when traveling overseas right? If I am taking a personal camera somewhere that is never a problem. So what if I am taking an Epic somewhere as a personal camera, how is that handled?
