So, can't afford a 911, but if you could buy an older, budget model, which? I dream of a red 944 with black leather. Blaupunkt radio. And i cant even change my oil. Is that lame? Just a Sunday afternoon car. A nice toy, with respect. One wants to motor a bit...

I would recommend the 914 as a weekend car. It handles the best of them 4. I have owned 5 total and loved every bit of them. I customized one of them quite a bit, boxster calipers, 911 rotors/suspension and wheels. New interior. There is a lot you can do, and it will be the most fun you have had in any car. You can take an on ramp at 50/60 easily, I did in a 300 degree onramp and it was a blast. The car is glued to the ground.

Nothing can beat a mid engine car.

Like cameras - depends on your mission. If it is Club Racing then see what is the strongest class in your area. If it's a weekend car - gotta go rag top and classic. If it's a project fixer then look for aftermarket part support. If you're trying to kill yourself like me - then GT3 RS

Not a porsche

Not a porsche

If it's not a 911, don't bother. It's a really nice audi or volkswagon, with the maintenance headache and cost of a Porsche. I had a 911 when I was younger and liquid, and a Cayenne more recently in an effort to feel like I was driving a Porsche again. The Cayenne was nice, but it wasn't a Porsche. The 911 is a completely unique thing- not really even a car, but something in a category all its own. (Of course, Oil-cooled and 12 miles to the gallon- very uncool.)

I guess if you MAKE me choose, I'd go 914 because at least it's mid-engine. But what a piece of crap!

And, flipside - Really? in this day and age? A Porsche? An oil-cooled gas guzzler? Get a Ducati, at least that gets decent mileage... or how about a nice electric car, get a tax break, and attract the environmentalist babes... And, since were just trying out ideas here... Tesla! That's as cool as it gets.

944 all the way.

Had two craigslist specials that I fixed up with my Dad (a porsche and American Hotrod mechanic by trade)

You can find one for under two grand EASILY. Prepare to drop about 4 grand more on it to keep it running. Or have someone drop an LS1 or some other small block in there and just drive the hell out of it.

Make sure you get one that has never overheated and has had the engine cooling system well maintained.

The 911 is the best, an SC is really not that expensive & repairs will be way less than a 928. I have owned a 83 911 SC targa since 1996, repairs to date under $5000 & that's in 15 years! Half that was at dealers in the first 5 years, now I fix it myself.

I had a 85 911 back in my 20's and loved it..... bullet proof!

But I'm a big fan of the 96-98 last of the air-cooled 911's..... you can get them for the price of a new tauras.... a bargain.

I did have a 74 914 2.0 and it was a fun car..... I traded a 58 lambretta scooter for it.... guess which one is worth more now?

Now I'm a lexus guy in my mid 40's.... a gx for work, and a gs450h for fun. The 450h is an amazing car..... 160mph with ease and quite, smooth, and one hell of a stereo!!!!

Love it all!

944 is an Audi
928 is a bad response to the above Audi
914 is a volkswagon

why leave out a mint 912

I've have a 95' 911 C2 for 7 years, Sunday drives and a few track days per year. I would save a bit more can get a early '80s 911 SC. My neighbor has a '80 targa with new paint and interior, no mechanical issues, and paid under 10k about 5 years ago.

Mine needs a new main seal or valve cover seal, I forget which but, approx $1800 as the engine has to be pulled to access. So, she sits in the garage leaking oil. On a budget I agree on the 914, pure fun in the canyons and track.

Hadn't thought of a 912. Hmm. My wife said forget the Porsche and look for an MG or something. Hmm.

Never underestimate the wisdom of a good woman. They are far more logical and intelligent than we'll ever be.

Had a 944 turbo way back when. Fast and fun.
