Mark,

you should know that 400 employees at RED can't earn enough to sell about 2000 Epics M+X and earn for living.

It must be something bigger valued for less money that they can sell for tens of thousands and then earn their salaries.

And what it could be?

4K, 120fps, small, lightweight, PL/Canon EF mounts, HDMI/HD-SDI and playback from day one enabled, accessories compatible with Epic...

All for about $12,000 (body only)!

No more backorders...

Am I kidding again?

I am really hoping for three things; 4K Resolution 10-12-14 MP Digital Stills Camera (please I don't want to bring a 7D with me on every shoot) Interchangeable lens with at least one Red Electronic Lens available at shipping.
Electronic lens are going to be great. Auto focus, Racking, Face Detection, Run and Gun, Indi Film, Jib / Festival / Concert / TV / Web Streaming the market will be huge.
When the wireless streaming module arrives it's going to change everything.

Is it still a 2/3" chip camera? Is it now a S35 camera? 3K or 4K?

Jim mentioned in a post that 1080/2K is not enough. Which seems to suggest that 3K might be enough. BUT I really think 4K should be the baseline for RED. I really think it'll dilute the argument to bring in Scarlet at 3K. Plus, standardizing on 4K will allow Scarlet/EPIC to be used together on set and share exactly the same post workflow.

Hopefully, the lower price comes in another way.

Now when EPIC (and even RED One) has taken the rightfull position in the industry, the biggies started to move.

When your opposition is reacting to what you are doing, you are winning. So many large companies reacted to Apple's iPod and not a one could release a competitive MP3 player to push back the iPod. Not a single one. All the while, Apple stuck to its guns and did not themselves react to new competition. They sailed a steady course, full speed ahead, both at the same time.

When Steve Jobs demonstrated the iPhone in January 2007, some people didn't believe that a small gadget could do all that cool stuff.

Nobody gave established players a mandate for anything. Whether Apple or Sony or RED or Canon, nobody has a mandate. Market leadership has to be earned. Smaller players can out-manoeuvre larger ones. Uruguay is a much smaller nation than England and yet has two World Cup victories to England's one. Cool, huh?

I may not be a RED customer for a while (shooting movies is not my industry). But, my goodness, I love this company!

EDIT: I predict a 16:9 sensor, regardless of physical dimensions.

I hope purchasing and package options will be announced right at bat on the 3rd. That way we have that hour to figure out what we want so when everything goes live on the store we can just go in and pull the trigger without spending a whole lot of time looking at the shelves...

Yeah, that wouldn't make any sense. I think we just get so much speculation around here that people dream of the moon sometimes.

What's going to be really interesting is where exactly Scarlet fits in and at what pricepoint. There was some great discussion about this on the RC podcast this week. Is it still a 2/3" chip camera? Is it now a S35 camera? 3K or 4K? These are all reasonable configurations that are below Epic spec (and surely things like framerates will be lower as well), but if you start pushing it up too much and it starts hitting the $12K-$15K price range then you lose a lot of the indie crowd for which I believe have been the hungriest for this product since it was announced. Features are awesome, but price is super important too. You already have the best digital cinema product (with the most features) available with the Epic... so how do you decide what to trim with the Scarlet? My guess is RED doesn't even know what the final specs are going to be. It's quite a game, but it sure is an exciting one.

Totally agree. Its going to be interesting to see what RED do with the spec.

So the decreeing differences, I would guess, would be on Resolution, Dynamic Range, HDRx, REDcode and interchangeable lenses.

Scarlet has to be less specced than EPIC from a business prospective and priced accordingly.

This is what's leading to the anticipation - what we are all doing here. Guessing. Which we know can be dangerous as we all guess and then someone thinks it's fact (I've done that myself before).

I think the price point will based in line with where RED think this product belongs. Do they price aggressively and aim for the Indie market where their would be a huge take up but probably limited return on investment, or go slightly high and market out some people.

Jim always makes the point that to really own any sort of equipment like this, you have to look at your Return on Investment and he'll be doing the same with the spec vs price point. I wouldn't be surprised if they make a final decision 5 minutes before the release the details :-)

In my eyes, the EPIC is a steal for the price, even if you add on the additional support kit. Canon's announcement is only going to help all of us as consumers and customers. Jim's been looking for a fight for a while and it looks like he's going to get his own way (as he always does) ;-)

One thing is for sure, Nov 3rd is going to be a major wake up call and a very interesting day/night.

:-)

How about Live streaming of event announcement Jim...

Guys, relax:)
When Canon done something revolutionary for their clients?:) Only 5d Mark and so it was accidentally:)
Then 24p and manual focus after 1 year:)
I think Canon as a Sony f65 do it under pressure because all line Cinealta has became scrap metal after Epic is realesed!:)
And Canon 5D Mark will be scrap metal after realesed Scarlet so Canon want to save face before Scarlet released and according to placee of release - Hollywood it must be 4K camera for arround 5 000 USD otherwise it will be the shame!:)

I believe Canon will match specs to specs with RED & overall their biggest bet is on the glasses they were experience in building which still Red is lacking on Lenses. Other than that I appreciate a CEO so excited about other product launch on same day their product is launched.

I am expecting Steve Jobs kind of Keynote Presentation from JIM to get people's attention and also on development of Scarlet based on user experience rather than just buiding competing camera and accessories.

Hope Jim got my point!

Now, what JIM should do, is record his mini Keynote on Scarlet and release the video at 6pm PST so we are all downloading the same video - then do Q&A on REDuser - that would be sooooo cool.

We're just all playing follow the leader. :)

Of course we're all nuts. That's why we own RED. That's why we defend RED. That's why we support RED in the trenches, thousands of miles away from Irvine.

Because we are all nuts and we all believe in each other.

... sweetly put ... :-)

The word is starting to leak out Jim. Canon had a closed sneak preview at b&h photo a few days ago in New York . It is a 4k s35 camera but the recording format is of concern. Wide open has the specs. http://wideopencamera.com/cameras/rumor-canon-4k-s35-video-camera-announce-november-2011/

Yup. And I have been told repeatedly by some solid sources "RED has nothing to worry about (w/respect to Canon announcement)".

More Canon PL lenses coming - but that was always obvious.

To me - this is all about price point and spec for Scarlet. Nothing now, or coming anytime soon - can do what the EPIC does.

I'm just happy that some people are finally starting to understand that 4K is coming fast - at CES 2012 you will see 4K displays from 6 companies.

November 3rd is going to be the showdown between an aging aircraft carrier and a nuclear powered PT boat with Jim at the helm chompin' on a cigar launching torpedos like its world war III.

I think your right here Mark. I think it will come down to price point. From what I can see, research, follow, Canon are pointing their camera at around $15k mark, so if Scarlet can trump that price with same / better specs (HDRx, 4K, REDcode, etc) - either way, its going to bring 4K to the forefront for a lot of people come 2012.

But isn't that what we've all been saying for the last 3-4 years?!?!?!?!?

:-)

I committed to going Total Red at the beginning. Other than Nikon lenses and maybe a few third party Red type accessories, I will continue to do so. I really don't care what other manufacturers are doing.

A 4k 9Mp Scarlet based on the original R1M sensor size and format is all that is needed to meet any of the current or anticipated competition from low end large sensor production cameras. Especially if Red can keep an entry level shooting package under $10k.

Dare we hope for such an incredible possibility?

Like many I committed to giving my clients the best for the money they had to spend and buying the best I could afford to provide that service at the time. I expect the same from the people who I buy my cameras from along with reliability, support and quality along with flexibility. We are all fortunate to be in a position to benefit from the competition and development being done by amazing companies like Red, Canon, Panasonic, Sony. The exciting part about the announcement of Scarlet is so many here have followed this camera and company from the starting line and throughout the course, and now the checkered flag is in sight. Canon is a big player with super products that pay the rent for thousands around the world and has a large "fan base" but Red has captured the eyes and hearts of a core group of talented people in the Box Seats with big budgets and if Scarlet is within the budgets of those of us up in Standing Room only .....look out world.
IMHO

From a couple of reliable sources: There is a reality show testing the Canon prototype in the LA area, and a number of well known Hollywood DPs have seen a preview. 50Mbps 4:22, S35 sensor, adaptable lens mount. Didn't hear the 4K part, but it makes sense. Based on what we believe is coming from Red, Scarlet seems like the easy winner: modularity, Red Code, RAW, and continued innovation from a company the "gets it." The Canon offer will make a big splash, no doubt, but I'll be hanging on to my Epic. Epic is in a different league than the new Canon, based on the rumors. In fact, you'd have to shoot me to take my Epic. Even then, you couldn't pry it from my cold dead hands. Jim and the Red team have given me the best single camera tool I have ever used over a long time in the business. I loved my 16SR in the 80's, I thought the 435 was a terrific camera, but Epic is sheer creative, design, ergonomic, ease of use genius.

So Scarlet is better than EPIC ?... I thought the biggest announcement from RED was the EPIC!!..

Your starting to scare me...

Mark,
What Mr. Jannard means is that the new Monstro Dragon sensor that RED will announce (in addition to the Scarlet announcement) will make the EPIC the absolute best DSMC in the world.
No matter what other companies are going to announce by then.

For the starter, 50Mbps for 4K is bit on the low side, unless they come up with competing REDRAW.

As far as I remember back in 2006 RED prototype had 250Mbps.
Also Canon S35 camera without announcement of a new set of Canon EF motion ready lenses is like an iPhone 4S announcement.

Bit better, we’ll wait for the iPhone 5.

If it is what will happen I will be really disappointed, I was hoping to have a nice alternate backup camera.
Last time I was really disappointed was when Apple released iPad2 that was not with 2K screen and without built in SMS capability.

Am I too demanding?
Maybe that is why I am with RED.
RED will never release "iPad2" without 2K screen:-)
